The feeding response, which in a prime adult is typically vigorous and immediate upon presentation of food, may become more selective or less enthusiastic. Physical changes associated with aging in Desert Iguanas include a gradual loss of muscle mass along the limbs and tail base, a subtle dulling of the dorsal coloration and pattern contrast, and progressive wear of the acrodont teeth that may eventually affect the animal's ability to process tough or fibrous plant material. The skin may lose some of its elasticity, and shed cycles may become less regular or produce more frequent incomplete sheds as the animal's integumentary turnover slows. In females, reproductive cycling may become irregular or cease entirely, which is generally a benign change that can actually reduce health risks associated with egg production in geriatric animals.
