During this period, the gecko undergoes its most dramatic physical transformation, growing from a tiny hatchling of two to three grams into a sub-adult weighing anywhere from 25 to 35 grams. Monitoring weight gain on a weekly or biweekly basis is the most reliable way to assess whether a juvenile is developing at a healthy rate.

Juvenile crested geckos shed their skin frequently to accommodate rapid growth, sometimes as often as every one to two weeks during peak growth spurts. Because crested geckos typically consume their shed skin, you may not always observe the process directly. However, you should watch for signs that a shed is approaching, such as a dull or whitish appearance to the skin, and ensure that humidity levels are adequate to support a clean, complete shed. Retained shed on the toes remains a concern throughout the juvenile period.

Body proportions change noticeably during adolescence. The head becomes more defined relative to the body, the crest structures along the top of the head and down the back become more prominent, and the overall musculature fills out. Males may begin to develop visible hemipenal bulges at the base of the tail as they approach maturity, while females maintain a smoother profile in that area. These differences can become apparent as early as six to eight months of age in well-fed juveniles.

Growth rates can vary considerably between individual geckos even within the same clutch. Some juveniles grow quickly and reach adult size within a year, while others develop at a slower pace and may take closer to 18 or even 24 months to reach full size. Neither pace is inherently problematic as long as the gecko is eating consistently, maintaining healthy body condition, and showing no signs of illness. Avoid the temptation to overfeed in an attempt to accelerate growth, as this can lead to obesity and associated health issues.

Nutrition & Diet Transition

As crested geckos transition from the hatchling phase into the juvenile stage, their nutritional requirements increase to support rapid growth. The foundation of the juvenile diet remains a high-quality powdered crested gecko diet mixed with water, offered fresh every other day. Juvenile geckos are more enthusiastic eaters than hatchlings and will consume noticeably larger portions. Offer the prepared diet in a slightly larger dish than what was used during the hatchling phase, and monitor consumption patterns to adjust portion sizes accordingly.

Live insect supplementation becomes more important during the juvenile growth phase. Appropriately sized crickets, small dubia roaches, and black soldier fly larvae are excellent protein sources that support muscle development and skeletal growth. The insects should be no larger than the space between the gecko's eyes to prevent choking or digestive issues. Fresh water should always be available through daily misting of the enclosure walls and foliage. Some juveniles will also learn to drink from a small, shallow water dish, but misting remains the primary method of hydration for arboreal geckos. Ensure that the prepared diet is mixed to the correct consistency, as a mixture that is too thick may discourage feeding while one that is too watery provides less nutrition per lick.

Behavioral Changes

Juvenile crested geckos become noticeably more active, curious, and sometimes skittish compared to the relatively sedentary hatchling stage. As they grow, they explore their enclosures more extensively during nighttime hours, testing every surface, climbing opportunity, and hiding spot available to them. This increased activity is a positive sign of healthy development and should be encouraged through proper enclosure design that provides vertical space and varied climbing structures.

Many juvenile crested geckos go through a period of increased jumpiness and defensive behavior. When startled, a juvenile may leap suddenly from your hand or from a perch, which can result in injury if the gecko falls from a significant height or lands on a hard surface. This flighty behavior is a natural survival instinct and typically diminishes as the gecko matures and becomes accustomed to regular, gentle handling. Handling sessions during the juvenile phase should be brief, conducted close to a soft surface, and always supervised.

Some juveniles may exhibit territorial or aggressive behaviors, particularly as they approach sexual maturity. Males housed together may begin to display dominance behaviors such as head bobbing, tail waving, and chasing. These interactions can escalate to biting and physical injury, so juvenile males should be separated into individual enclosures as soon as any signs of aggression appear. Even juveniles that previously cohabited peacefully can become aggressive seemingly overnight as hormonal changes begin.

Feeding responses also change during the juvenile period. Many juveniles become more enthusiastic hunters, actively stalking and pouncing on live feeder insects with visible excitement. Others may develop strong preferences for certain flavors of prepared diet, refusing options they previously accepted. This selectiveness is normal and can be managed by rotating between different diet flavors to maintain variety and ensure balanced nutrition.

Handling & Taming

The juvenile period is an ideal time to begin building a handling routine with your crested gecko. Regular, gentle interaction during this phase establishes trust and reduces the gecko's natural fear response, resulting in a calmer, more handleable adult. Begin with short sessions of just two to three minutes, allowing the gecko to walk across your hands rather than restraining it. Over time, most juveniles will settle down and tolerate increasingly longer periods of handling.

Always approach a juvenile crested gecko calmly and from the side rather than from above. A hand descending from above mimics the approach of a predator and triggers a strong flight response. Scoop the gecko gently from below or allow it to walk onto your hand voluntarily. If the gecko drops its tail during handling, do not panic. While tail loss is permanent in crested geckos, it does not affect the animal's overall health or quality of life. It does indicate that the gecko felt severely threatened, so reassess your handling technique and give the animal a few days of rest before trying again.

Timing matters when it comes to handling. Crested geckos are nocturnal, so they are most alert and responsive during evening hours. Attempting to handle a gecko during the middle of the day when it is in deep rest can result in a stressed, disoriented animal that is more likely to jump or bite. Schedule handling sessions for early evening when the gecko is naturally waking up and becoming active.

Consistency is more important than duration. A juvenile that is handled for a few minutes every evening will become tame far more quickly than one that is handled for 20 minutes once a week. Frequent, low-stress exposure builds familiarity and reduces the stress hormones associated with being picked up. Over the course of several weeks to months, most juvenile crested geckos transition from flighty and nervous to calm and curious during handling sessions.

Enclosure Upgrades

As a juvenile crested gecko grows, its enclosure needs will change. The small hatchling container that served well during the first few weeks of life will eventually become too cramped, and the gecko will need to be transitioned into a larger setup. Most keepers upgrade to an intermediate enclosure around two to three months of age, and then to a full-sized adult enclosure once the gecko reaches sub-adult size, typically around eight to twelve months of age depending on growth rate.

An intermediate enclosure for a growing juvenile might be a 7- to 10-gallon terrarium oriented vertically to provide climbing space. The enclosure should have a secure screen top or front-opening doors to prevent escape while allowing adequate ventilation. Begin introducing more naturalistic elements during this phase, such as live or artificial plants, cork bark tubes, bamboo poles, and vine structures. These features provide the three-dimensional environment that arboreal geckos need to exhibit natural behaviors.

Substrate can be transitioned from paper towels to more naturalistic options once the gecko is large enough that accidental ingestion is less of a risk. Coconut fiber, organic topsoil mixtures, or bioactive substrates are popular choices. If using a loose substrate, monitor the gecko during feeding to ensure it is not consuming substrate along with its food. Some keepers prefer to maintain a bare-bottom approach or use non-particle substrates throughout the gecko's life for maximum safety.

Lighting during the juvenile phase should follow a natural photoperiod of roughly 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness. While crested geckos do not require UVB lighting to survive when fed a properly supplemented diet, emerging research suggests that low-level UVB exposure may benefit calcium metabolism and overall wellbeing. If you choose to provide UVB, use a low-output bulb appropriate for shade-dwelling species and ensure the gecko can retreat to shaded areas within the enclosure.

Sexing & Separation

Determining the sex of a juvenile crested gecko becomes increasingly possible as the animal approaches maturity. In young hatchlings, external sex differences are essentially invisible, but by six to nine months of age, males typically develop visible hemipenal bulges at the base of the tail and may show pre-anal pores that appear as a row of small, slightly raised dots just anterior to the vent. Females lack these features, maintaining a smooth, flat profile at the tail base. A jeweler's loupe or magnifying lens can aid in identifying these subtle structures.

Sexing accuracy improves with the size and age of the gecko. Attempting to sex a very young juvenile is unreliable and can lead to incorrect conclusions about housing and future plans. If you are keeping multiple juveniles and plan to separate by sex, err on the side of caution and separate any individuals showing even ambiguous signs of male development. Two males housed together after the onset of maturity will almost certainly fight, leading to stress, injuries, and potential tail loss.

Female juveniles can generally be housed together with fewer risks than males, but even female cohabitation requires careful monitoring. Competition for food and preferred hiding spots can create chronic low-level stress that suppresses growth and immune function. Any gecko that appears to be losing weight, showing signs of stress, or being excluded from food should be separated into its own enclosure immediately.

For keepers who are not planning to breed, housing each juvenile individually from the start is the simplest approach and eliminates all risks associated with cohabitation. Individual housing ensures that each gecko has unrestricted access to food, eliminates social stress, and allows you to monitor each animal's health and growth without the confounding variable of tank-mate interactions. The small additional cost of separate enclosures is well worth the reduction in risk.

Common Juvenile Health Concerns

Metabolic bone disease is the most significant health threat facing juvenile crested geckos. This condition results from inadequate calcium and vitamin D3 intake during the critical growth phase and manifests as soft or rubbery jaw bones, kinked tails or spines, difficulty climbing, tremors, and lethargy. In advanced cases, the gecko may be unable to support its own body weight. Prevention through proper supplementation is far more effective than treatment, so ensure that the diet is rich in calcium and that feeder insects are appropriately dusted at every feeding.

Parasitic infections can affect juvenile crested geckos, particularly those acquired from sources with less rigorous husbandry standards. Common internal parasites include pinworms and coccidia, which can cause poor appetite, weight loss, abnormal droppings, and failure to thrive. A fecal examination performed by a reptile-experienced veterinarian can identify parasitic infections, and treatment is usually straightforward when caught early. Annual fecal checks are recommended even for healthy-appearing juveniles.

Respiratory infections can occur when humidity levels are chronically too high without adequate ventilation, or when temperatures drop below the appropriate range for extended periods. Symptoms include open-mouth breathing, visible mucus around the nostrils or mouth, wheezing sounds, and decreased activity. Respiratory infections require veterinary treatment and will not resolve on their own. Correcting the environmental conditions that contributed to the infection is essential to prevent recurrence.

Stunted growth is sometimes observed in juvenile crested geckos that are kept under suboptimal conditions. A gecko that fails to gain weight over a period of several weeks despite having access to food may be dealing with an underlying health issue, chronic stress from cohabitation, temperatures that are too low for proper digestion, or insufficient dietary variety. Evaluating and correcting husbandry parameters is the first step. If growth remains stalled after environmental corrections, a veterinary consultation is advisable to rule out metabolic or parasitic causes.
