Jackson's Chameleons are among the few chameleon species that give live birth rather than laying eggs. A female typically delivers between 8 and 30 neonates encased in a sticky membrane, which the babies break free from within minutes of being born. These tiny chameleons, measuring roughly one to two inches in total length, are fully formed miniatures of their adult counterparts and are immediately independent. The first day of life is critical, and keepers must be prepared to separate the neonates from the mother quickly to prevent stress or accidental harm.
Within the first few hours after birth, neonates will begin to explore their surroundings and may attempt to climb. It is essential to have a prepared nursery enclosure ready before the birth occurs. A well-ventilated screen enclosure with plenty of small, live plants and thin branches provides the ideal environment. The branches and plant stems should be thin enough for their tiny feet to grip securely, as falls at this stage can cause injury.
Hydration is the single most important concern during the first 24 hours. Neonates should be lightly misted with lukewarm water as soon as they are settled into their enclosure. Many neonates will begin drinking from droplets on leaves almost immediately, and this early hydration helps them flush their systems and begin functioning independently. Avoid pooling water at the bottom of the enclosure, as neonates can easily drown in even shallow standing water.
Temperature and lighting should be established before the neonates arrive. An ambient temperature of around 70 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit with a gentle basking spot no warmer than 80 degrees is appropriate. A low-output UVB light source is also important from day one, as Jackson's Chameleons require ultraviolet radiation for proper calcium metabolism even at this early stage.
