A Cave Gecko hatchling, belonging to the genus Goniurosaurus, emerges from its egg as a miniature but fully formed version of the adult, typically measuring between two and a half and three inches in total length. The hatching process itself is gradual, with the neonate slitting the leathery eggshell using a small egg tooth located on the tip of its snout and then resting for extended periods before fully emerging. Keepers must resist the instinct to peel away shell fragments or pull the hatchling free, as the animal may still be absorbing residual yolk through the umbilical connection. Premature interference can rupture the yolk sac, introduce bacterial contamination, or cause hemorrhaging that proves fatal in an animal this small.
Once the hatchling has emerged entirely, it will often remain motionless near or inside the egg for several hours. This period of stillness serves a critical biological function as the neonate finalizes yolk absorption and the umbilical site begins to close. The yolk provides essential nutrients, hydration, and passive immune factors that sustain the hatchling until it begins feeding independently. The incubation container should remain undisturbed during this window, kept at the same temperature and humidity levels that were maintained throughout the incubation period. A thin application of dilute povidone-iodine solution to the umbilical site can reduce infection risk, although this step is optional when incubation hygiene has been properly maintained throughout the egg's development.
The receiving enclosure must be fully prepared before the first egg in a clutch shows signs of pipping. Cave Geckos are secretive, nocturnal animals that experience significant stress when exposed to open, brightly lit environments, and this sensitivity is amplified in hatchlings. The neonatal enclosure should be small, dark, and well-furnished with multiple hiding options so that the hatchling feels secure from the moment it is transferred. A six-quart plastic tub with ventilation holes or a small five-gallon glass terrarium with an opaque background works well for the first several weeks. Substrate should be damp paper towel or sphagnum moss to maintain the humidity levels critical to this species while allowing easy monitoring of fecal output and feeding response.
Careful observation during the first twenty-four hours provides essential diagnostic information about the hatchling's viability. A healthy neonate will display smooth, unblemished skin with clearly defined banding or spotting patterns characteristic of its particular Goniurosaurus species or locality. The eyes should be fully open, clear, and responsive to movement. The tail should be straight and plump, showing no kinks, bends, or signs of retained yolk externally. Any hatchling that fails to right itself when gently turned, displays labored breathing, has a visibly swollen or discolored umbilical area, or shows discharge from the eyes, nostrils, or cloaca requires immediate evaluation by a veterinarian experienced with reptiles. Early intervention during this fragile period dramatically improves outcomes compared to waiting for symptoms to worsen.
