Blue-tongued skinks are ovoviviparous, meaning they give birth to fully formed live young rather than laying eggs. A typical litter ranges from five to twenty-five babies, and each neonate arrives enclosed in a thin membranous sac that it must break free from on its own. Within minutes of emerging, healthy neonates will begin flicking their characteristic blue tongues and exploring their surroundings. Resist the urge to handle them during these first critical hours, as they need time to orient themselves and recover from the stress of birth.
During the first day, the most important task is confirming that every baby has successfully freed itself from its birth membrane. Occasionally a weaker neonate may struggle, and gentle intervention with clean hands can be lifesaving if the membrane has not ruptured within a reasonable timeframe. Each baby should be visually inspected for obvious abnormalities such as kinked spines, missing limbs, or failure to move. Neonates that appear listless, refuse to flick their tongues, or remain curled and unresponsive may need veterinary evaluation.
Separation from the mother should happen within the first day. Female blue-tongued skinks do not provide parental care after birth and may inadvertently injure or even consume smaller offspring in a confined space. Prepare a dedicated nursery enclosure in advance so that babies can be transferred with minimal handling. Keep the nursery warm, secure, and free of any gaps or openings that a tiny skink could squeeze through.
Provide a shallow water dish and a secure hide on the warm side of the enclosure from the very beginning. Although neonates typically will not eat on their first day, access to fresh water is essential. Maintain the ambient temperature gradient and monitor it carefully with a reliable thermometer, as temperature regulation is one of the single most important factors in neonatal survival.
