Accurate sex determination is essential and can be challenging in blue-tongued skinks, as they lack the obvious external dimorphism seen in many reptile species. Males tend to have a broader, more robust head and a slightly longer, thicker tail base compared to females, but these differences are subtle and unreliable in some individuals. Probe sexing or ultrasound by an experienced reptile veterinarian provides definitive identification and should be performed before pairing any animals for breeding.
Plan for the outcomes of a successful breeding before you begin. A typical blue-tongued skink litter ranges from five to twenty-five babies, and each one will need individual housing, daily feeding, and veterinary care.
