Bearded dragon hatchlings emerge from their eggs after an incubation period of roughly 55 to 75 days. When a baby dragon first pips through the shell, it is important not to rush the process or attempt to pull it free. Hatchlings may take several hours to fully emerge, and they often rest partway through as they absorb the remaining yolk sac. This yolk provides essential nutrients that will sustain the baby during its first day of life outside the egg.
Once the hatchling has fully emerged and the yolk sac has been absorbed, it can be gently moved to a prepared enclosure. The baby should not be offered food during the first 24 hours, as it is still drawing energy from the absorbed yolk. Fresh, shallow water should be available, and a light misting of the enclosure walls can encourage the hatchling to drink droplets. Keep handling to a minimum during this period to reduce stress.
The enclosure for a newborn bearded dragon should already be set up with appropriate temperatures before the baby arrives. A basking spot of around 105 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit and a cool side near 80 to 85 degrees will allow the hatchling to thermoregulate. Proper temperatures from the very start are critical for digestion, immune function, and overall survival.
Observe the hatchling closely during the first day for any signs of distress, such as labored breathing, inability to right itself, or a yolk sac that has not fully absorbed. These issues may require prompt veterinary attention from a reptile-experienced veterinarian.
