A fully mature adult typically measures nine to twelve inches from snout to tail tip, with exceptional individuals occasionally reaching thirteen inches or slightly beyond. The transition from late juvenile to adult is not marked by a dramatic physical change but rather by a gradual stabilization of growth rate, a filling out of the body to its final proportions, and the complete development of secondary sexual characteristics that clearly distinguish males from females.
The adult body proportions of a healthy axolotl present a broad, somewhat flattened head that is wider than the neck, a stout cylindrical body with a gently rounded belly, and a laterally compressed tail that constitutes roughly one-third of the total body length. The external gills, the species' most iconic feature, should be full, densely branched, and richly colored in a healthy adult. Gill length and filament density are influenced by genetics, water quality history, and dissolved oxygen levels, and adults that have been maintained in consistently excellent water conditions throughout their lives tend to display the most impressive gill structures. The skin is smooth and permeable, lacking the scales found in reptilian species, and it should appear uniformly colored according to the animal's morph without dry patches, lesions, or excessive mucus production.
The prime adult phase represents the longest and most stable period of the axolotl's life, spanning from approximately eighteen months of age through the eighth or ninth year in well-maintained specimens. During this extended prime, the animal's care requirements settle into a manageable routine that demands consistency rather than the intensive daily attention required during larval and juvenile development. Growth essentially ceases or slows to imperceptible rates, caloric demands decrease compared to the juvenile growth phase, and the animal's behavior patterns become established and predictable. This stability should not be mistaken for a license to reduce husbandry standards, however, because the health consequences of environmental neglect during the adult years are cumulative and often do not manifest as clinical disease until significant organ damage has already occurred.
Adult axolotls display distinct individual personalities that become increasingly apparent to attentive keepers over time. Some individuals are bold and interactive, approaching the front glass when their keeper enters the room and readily accepting food from tongs held at the water's surface. Others are more reserved, preferring to remain in their hides during the day and emerging primarily during dim evening hours to forage and explore. Neither temperament is inherently healthier than the other, but a sudden and sustained change in an individual animal's established behavior pattern, such as a normally bold axolotl becoming persistently reclusive or a typically calm animal displaying agitation, should always be investigated as a potential early indicator of health problems or environmental disturbance.
