The Armadillo Lizard, Ouroborus cataphractus, is one of relatively few lizard species that gives birth to live young rather than laying eggs, a reproductive strategy known as viviparity. A typical birth event produces just one neonate, though twins occur on rare occasions. The newborn emerges fully formed, encased in a thin membranous sac that it ruptures independently within minutes. At birth, the neonate measures approximately three to three and a half inches in total length and already bears the species' distinctive heavily keeled, spiny dorsal scales, though these are considerably softer and more pliable than those of an adult. The keeper's role during the birth process is strictly observational. Attempting to assist the mother or manipulate the neonate prematurely risks injury to both animals and causes significant stress that can lead the female to reject or ignore the offspring.
Once free of the birth membrane, the neonate will typically remain motionless or move only sluggishly for the first hour or two while it absorbs residual nutrients and acclimates to its new environment. During this period, the newborn's coloring is noticeably darker and less defined than it will become over the following weeks, and the characteristic golden-brown to tawny hues of the species develop gradually. The mother does not provide any form of parental feeding or active care in the traditional sense, but the social nature of this species means that the neonate benefits enormously from remaining within the established group. In the wild, Armadillo Lizards live in communal colonies of up to thirty or more individuals within rock crevices along the western coast of South Africa, and neonates are tolerated and even sheltered by the group from birth.
The receiving enclosure should be prepared well before the anticipated birth date so that no scrambling or last-minute adjustments are needed. If the female is housed within an established colony, the neonate can often remain with the group without intervention, as adult Armadillo Lizards are remarkably non-aggressive toward conspecifics, including newborns. This is a stark departure from many reptile species where adults pose a predation risk to neonates. However, the keeper must ensure that food competition does not disadvantage the tiny newcomer and that the enclosure contains appropriately sized crevice retreats where the neonate can wedge itself safely, a behavior central to this species' survival strategy both in the wild and in captivity.
A healthy neonate will display certain clear indicators within the first twelve to twenty-four hours. It should be responsive to gentle stimulation, exhibit tongue-flicking behavior as it explores its surroundings, and demonstrate the ability to right itself if placed on its back. The eyes should be clear, fully open, and free of discharge. The umbilical site should appear clean with no trailing tissue, swelling, or discoloration. Any neonate that remains completely immobile beyond the initial two-hour rest period, refuses to tongue-flick, shows labored breathing with visible gular pumping, or has a visibly kinked spine requires immediate evaluation by a veterinarian experienced with cordylid lizards.
