Typically beginning around six to eight weeks after hatching and lasting until roughly eight to ten months of age, this period sees the anole transition from a fragile hatchling into a near-adult-sized lizard. Male and female green anoles begin to diverge in appearance during the juvenile stage. Males tend to grow slightly larger overall and start to develop a more pronounced snout and a larger, more colorful dewlap — the fan-shaped throat flap used in territorial and courtship displays. Females remain somewhat smaller and more slender, with a lighter-colored or reduced dewlap. By the end of the juvenile period, you should be able to distinguish sex with reasonable confidence based on these physical traits.

Shedding frequency increases during this growth phase, often occurring every one to two weeks. Each shed cycle should result in the complete removal of the old skin, and the freshly revealed skin beneath should appear bright and smooth. A well-growing juvenile should have a smoothly rounded body without visible ribs or spine, clear and alert eyes, strong grip strength when climbing, and a tail that is plump near the base. Nutrition & Diet Transition

As your green anole grows through the juvenile stage, its dietary needs shift in both quantity and prey size. While the pinhead crickets and fruit flies that sustained the hatchling remain acceptable, juvenile anoles can now handle slightly larger prey items. Small crickets, small mealworms, waxworms offered occasionally as treats, and appropriately sized dubia roaches all make excellent staple foods. Continue to follow the head-width rule: no prey item should be wider than the space between the anole's eyes.

Feeding frequency can gradually decrease from daily to every other day as the anole approaches adolescence, though growing juveniles generally benefit from daily feedings during the most active growth period between two and five months of age. One of the most notable changes is the emergence of territorial behavior, particularly in males. Young males will begin performing push-up displays, extending their dewlaps, and head-bobbing at perceived rivals, including their own reflections, other anoles in the enclosure, and even the keeper's hand during feeding time.

Color change behavior becomes more pronounced and complex during the juvenile stage. While hatchlings tend to remain green most of the time, juveniles develop a wider range of color responses tied to mood, temperature, social interactions, and overall health. A bright green anole in a warm, well-lit environment is generally content, while persistent brown or dark coloring may indicate stress, cold temperatures, illness, or social subordination. Activity levels typically increase during the juvenile phase as the anole becomes a more confident and efficient hunter. The small nursery enclosure that served your hatchling well will become inadequate as your green anole grows through the juvenile stage. By the time the anole reaches three to four months of age, it is time to transition to a larger enclosure that can serve it through adolescence and into adulthood. A single juvenile green anole should have at minimum a 10-gallon vertical terrarium, though a 20-gallon tall enclosure is preferable and will not need to be upgraded again as the animal reaches full size.

The enclosure layout should emphasize vertical space with plenty of climbing opportunities. Install a network of branches, vines, and cork bark pieces at various heights, creating multiple pathways from the cooler floor zone to the warmer basking area near the top. Broad-leafed live plants such as pothos, bromeliads, and dracaena serve double duty by providing climbing surfaces and maintaining humidity through transpiration. Lighting and heating equipment may need to be updated as the enclosure size increases. Verify that your UVB bulb covers an adequate portion of the enclosure and that the basking spot still reaches 85 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. In a larger enclosure, the thermal gradient should be more pronounced, giving the juvenile clear options for thermoregulation. Exercise & Activity

Green anoles are naturally active lizards, and juvenile anoles in particular display high energy levels as they explore, hunt, and establish their place in their environment. Unlike some reptile species that spend long hours basking motionlessly, healthy juvenile green anoles should be moving frequently throughout the daylight hours, climbing from perch to perch, stalking prey, and displaying to real or imagined rivals.

The best way to promote healthy activity is through enrichment built into the enclosure design. Varied terrain with branches at multiple angles, dense foliage that requires navigating through rather than around, and strategically placed basking spots that encourage the anole to move vertically all contribute to natural exercise. Changing the position of perches and decorations periodically can stimulate exploration and prevent the enclosure from becoming monotonous.

Feeding practices can also serve as exercise opportunities. Rather than placing prey items in a single predictable location, release them into different areas of the enclosure so the anole must actively hunt. This mimics the natural foraging experience and engages both the physical and mental faculties of the growing lizard. Some keepers use feeding tongs to present individual prey items from different positions, encouraging the anole to move and strike from various angles.

Monitor your juvenile's activity levels as a health indicator. A sudden decrease in movement, prolonged hiding, or reluctance to climb may signal illness, improper temperatures, or social stress in a group housing situation. Conversely, frantic pacing or constant nose-rubbing against the glass often indicates stress from an enclosure that is too small, too exposed, or poorly positioned in a high-traffic area of your home. Aim for an active but calm demeanor, where the anole moves purposefully through its environment without signs of distress.

Health Monitoring

Regular health monitoring during the juvenile stage is essential because problems that develop during this rapid-growth period can have lasting consequences for your green anole's long-term health and quality of life. Establish a weekly routine of careful observation, noting body condition, behavior patterns, appetite, shedding quality, and any changes from the previous week. Keeping a brief log can help you identify gradual trends that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Metabolic bone disease remains the most significant health threat during the juvenile stage. Because the skeleton is growing rapidly, any deficiency in calcium, vitamin D3, or UVB exposure can cause disproportionate damage in a short time. Early signs include a softening of the jaw so that it feels spongy rather than firm when the anole bites prey, difficulty catching insects due to weakened limbs, and a tendency to rest flat on surfaces rather than gripping with normal posture. Parasitic infections are common in green anoles, particularly those sourced from wild-caught populations or pet stores with mixed housing. Correcting the environmental conditions that caused the infection is equally important to prevent recurrence.

Socialization & Handling

The juvenile stage represents the best window of opportunity for acclimating your green anole to regular human interaction, though expectations should remain realistic. Green anoles are observational pets by nature and will never be as handleable as a bearded dragon or leopard gecko. The goal is not to create a cuddly companion but rather to reduce the anole's stress response to routine enclosure maintenance, feeding, and occasional handling when necessary.

Begin with predictable daily routines. Feed at approximately the same time each day, perform misting on a consistent schedule, and move slowly and deliberately when working around the enclosure. Over weeks and months, many juvenile green anoles learn to associate their keeper's presence with food rather than threat, and some will even approach the front of the enclosure at feeding time. This is a significant milestone that indicates a meaningful reduction in baseline stress levels.

If you wish to handle your juvenile anole, keep sessions brief — no more than five to ten minutes — and always support the animal's body fully. Never grab an anole by the tail, as green anoles can drop their tails as a defense mechanism. While the tail will regenerate, the replacement is typically shorter, differently colored, and structurally weaker than the original. Let the anole walk from hand to hand rather than restraining it, and return it to the enclosure at the first signs of significant stress such as gaping, frantic running, or persistent dark coloring.

For juvenile anoles housed in groups, monitor social dynamics carefully as the animals mature. Males approaching sexual maturity may become increasingly aggressive toward one another, and even male-female pairs may display problematic interactions as territorial instincts develop. A general guideline is to house no more than one male per enclosure and provide enough space and resources — basking spots, hiding places, and feeding stations — that females are not forced into constant competition.
