African Dwarf Frogs reach full sexual maturity and their adult body size between nine and twelve months of age, though some individuals may continue adding marginal body mass for several months beyond this point. A fully mature adult typically measures between one and one and a half inches in body length from snout to vent, with females tending toward the larger end of the range and males remaining slightly smaller and more slender. The body is flattened dorsoventrally, an adaptation to their bottom-dwelling lifestyle in the slow-moving streams and shallow pools of their native equatorial African habitats.
The skin of a healthy adult African Dwarf Frog displays a coloration ranging from olive-brown to grayish-green, often marked with darker spots or mottled patterning that provides camouflage against natural substrates. The skin is smooth and slightly mucous, a critical feature that aids in moisture retention and provides a degree of protection against pathogens. Unlike some amphibians, African Dwarf Frogs do not produce toxic skin secretions, which is one reason they can coexist safely with many fish species in community aquariums.
Sexual dimorphism becomes fully apparent in adult frogs. Males possess the post-axillary subdermal gland, visible as a small pinkish or whitish bump located just behind each front leg. Males are also the only sex capable of producing the species' characteristic buzzing or humming vocalization, which they use to attract mates. This sound, often described as a quiet, underwater buzzing, is frequently the first sign that keepers notice indicating they have a male in their collection. Females, in contrast, are rounder and fuller-bodied, particularly when carrying eggs, and lack both the gland and the ability to vocalize.
The adult phase represents the longest period in the African Dwarf Frog's lifespan, potentially spanning four to six years or more under optimal captive conditions. During this time, the frog's care requirements are relatively stable and predictable compared to the rapidly changing needs of the tadpole and juvenile stages. However, this stability should not breed complacency, as consistent, attentive husbandry remains essential for preventing the slow accumulation of problems that can shorten an otherwise healthy frog's life.
