One of the first indicators is a decline in overall activity level. A Rhinelander that once spent its free-roam time dashing through tunnels, binkying across the room, and investigating every corner may begin to prefer shorter bursts of activity interspersed with longer rest periods. The decline is often most noticeable during the breed's natural peak activity windows of early morning and evening. The rabbit may still display curiosity and engagement with its environment but at a lower intensity, choosing to observe rather than physically investigate novel stimuli.
Physical changes accompany the behavioral shift. The Rhinelander's characteristic full-arch posture may soften as muscle tone decreases and joint flexibility diminishes. The rabbit may sit more heavily on its hocks, and the pronounced lift of the belly off the ground that defines the breed's silhouette in its prime may flatten somewhat. The coat may lose some of its youthful sheen, and the tricolor markings, while still present, can appear slightly less crisp as the fur texture changes with age. Weight fluctuations, either gradual gain from reduced activity or gradual loss from declining appetite, should be monitored closely.
Establishing a senior baseline through a comprehensive veterinary examination at the onset of visible aging changes provides a reference point against which future assessments can be measured. This examination should include a complete blood panel, urinalysis, dental evaluation, and body condition scoring.
