When to Worry

Despite best efforts, not all kits in a litter will survive, and knowing when to intervene versus when a situation is beyond help is an important skill. A kit found outside the nest and cold to the touch should be warmed slowly by holding it against your skin or placing it on a towel-wrapped warm water bottle. Rapid rewarming can cause shock, so patience is essential. Once the kit is warm and responsive, return it to the nest and monitor closely at the next feeding.

Refusal to nurse is a serious concern. If a kit consistently has a flat or concave abdomen while its littermates appear well-fed, it may be unable to compete for a nursing position. Sudden death in an apparently healthy kit, while distressing, is not uncommon in rabbit litters and does not necessarily indicate a problem with your care.
