Before considering breeding an English Angora, both the buck and the doe should be evaluated for overall health, temperament, and breed quality. The doe should be at least six months old and ideally between eight and twelve months at the time of her first breeding. Bucks typically reach sexual maturity slightly earlier but should also be fully grown and in good condition before being used for breeding. Breeding animals that are too young, underweight, or in poor health increases the risk of complications for both the mother and the litter.

A pre-breeding veterinary examination is strongly recommended. The vet should assess dental health, body condition, and reproductive fitness. Any signs of malocclusion, chronic illness, or structural abnormalities should disqualify the animal from a responsible breeding program. A receptive doe may display a reddened and swollen vulva, restless behavior, chin rubbing on cage fixtures, and a willingness to lift her hindquarters when her back is stroked.

Always bring the doe to the buck's cage for mating, not the other way around. Does can be intensely territorial, and a buck placed in an unfamiliar cage may be attacked rather than accepted. Behavioral changes often accompany pregnancy. The doe may become more reclusive, less interested in interaction, and increasingly focused on nest preparation as kindling approaches. In the final days before delivery, many does begin pulling fur from their chest and belly to line the nest. This instinctive behavior creates the insulating layer that will protect the kits after birth. Provide a nest box with soft bedding several days before the expected due date so the doe has time to prepare.

Stress during pregnancy can lead to complications including reabsorption of the fetuses, premature kindling, or aggression toward the kits after birth. Minimize handling during the final week, keep the environment quiet and predictable, and avoid introducing new animals or making changes to the doe's enclosure during this critical period.

Kindling & Delivery

Most English Angora does kindle without difficulty and require minimal human intervention during delivery. Kindling typically occurs in the early morning hours and may be completed before the owner is even aware it has begun. The doe delivers each kit individually, chewing through the amniotic sac and umbilical cord and cleaning the newborn before the next arrives. A typical litter ranges from four to eight kits, though larger and smaller litters are possible.

After kindling is complete, check the nest gently but promptly. Count the kits, remove any stillborn babies or placental material, and verify that all living kits are tucked into the fur-lined nest and appear warm and active. If a kit is found outside the nest, cold and motionless, warm it slowly between your hands or against your body and return it to the nest once responsive.

Complications during delivery, while uncommon, can be life-threatening. A doe that shows signs of active labor for more than an hour without producing a kit, or that appears lethargic, bleeding excessively, or in obvious distress, requires immediate veterinary attention. Retained kits or placental tissue can lead to infection and sepsis if not addressed quickly.

In the hours following kindling, offer the doe fresh water and a generous portion of food. The energy expenditure of delivery and the onset of milk production create significant caloric demand. A well-fed, well-hydrated doe is better equipped to nurse her litter successfully. Avoid excessive disturbance during the first 24 hours, but do check on the kits at least once to confirm that nursing has occurred, evidenced by round, full bellies.

Postpartum Care

The postpartum period requires attentive support for the doe as she recovers from delivery and takes on the demands of nursing. Her nutritional needs during lactation are among the highest she will ever experience, often exceeding even those of late pregnancy. Provide unlimited pellets during the first two to three weeks of nursing, along with unlimited hay and generous portions of fresh vegetables. Monitor her body condition closely, as a nursing doe can lose weight rapidly if her caloric intake does not keep pace with milk production.

Check the nest daily for cleanliness and kit health. Replace soiled bedding as needed, taking care not to disturb the fur lining excessively. Examine each kit briefly for signs of adequate nutrition, including plump bellies and smooth, warm skin. A kit that feels cold, has a wrinkled or sunken abdomen, or is consistently found away from the nest may not be nursing successfully and may require supplemental feeding.

The doe's own health should be monitored just as carefully as the kits'. Watch for signs of mastitis, a painful infection of the mammary glands characterized by swollen, hot, or discolored tissue. Vaginal discharge that persists beyond the first day or two, or that has an unusual color or odor, may indicate a retained placenta or uterine infection and warrants a veterinary visit.

As the kits grow and begin leaving the nest around three weeks of age, the doe may need periodic breaks from their constant attention. Ensure she has a space she can retreat to where the kits cannot follow, allowing her to rest and feed without interruption. Gradual weaning between six and eight weeks of age eases the transition for both the doe and the kits.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Breeding English Angoras carries a significant ethical responsibility that extends beyond the mechanics of mating and kindling. Every litter brought into the world places demands on resources, time, and the availability of quality homes. Before committing to a breeding program, ask yourself honestly whether you can provide lifetime care for any kits that do not find suitable placement, and whether the breeding serves a purpose beyond personal curiosity or profit.

Health screening of breeding stock is a non-negotiable component of ethical practice. Breeding animals with known hereditary conditions, poor temperament, or substandard wool quality perpetuates problems that affect future generations. Work within the breed standard and consult with experienced mentors who can help you make informed pairing decisions that prioritize the health and welfare of the offspring.

The English Angora's intensive grooming requirements mean that every kit produced needs an owner who is prepared for a substantial, ongoing time commitment.
