Successful breeding of pink toe tarantulas requires both the male and female to be in appropriate condition. The female should be a well-established adult that has been in the keeper's care long enough to have a predictable molt schedule and a healthy feeding history. She should have molted within the last few months, as a fresh molt ensures that the spermatheca are clear and receptive. A female that is approaching a molt or appears to be in pre-molt should not be paired, as she may be more aggressive toward the male and any stored sperm will be lost during the next shed.
The male must have completed his ultimate molt and developed the physical structures necessary for mating. These include the tibial hooks on the front pair of legs, which are used to hold the female's fangs during mating, and the modified pedipalps that contain the embolus used to transfer sperm. A mature male will also typically construct a sperm web, a small sheet of silk onto which he deposits sperm and then loads it into his pedipalps. Observing a male constructing a sperm web is a reliable confirmation that he is sexually mature and ready to breed.
Both spiders should be well-fed in the weeks leading up to a pairing attempt. A hungry female is far more likely to view the male as prey rather than a mate, so ensuring she has eaten recently and has a plump abdomen reduces the risk of a fatal encounter. The male should also be in good condition, though mature males often eat less as they focus on reproductive behavior.
Timing the pairing can influence success. While pink toe tarantulas can breed year-round in captivity, some breeders report better results when pairing during warmer months or after a slight increase in humidity, mimicking the seasonal cues that would trigger breeding activity in the wild. However, these environmental manipulations are not strictly necessary for captive breeding to succeed.
