A freshly matured male is in his best breeding condition, as his physical condition and drive will decline steadily in the months following his final molt.

The female must be well-fed, healthy, and ideally several months past her most recent molt. A female that has recently molted may not yet have the energy reserves needed to produce and sustain an egg sac, and pairing her too soon after a molt can result in failed breeding attempts or a non-viable egg sac. Her abdomen should be plump and well-rounded, indicating that she has sufficient nutritional reserves to support the energetically demanding process of egg production.

Before introducing the pair, keepers should assess the female's temperament and feeding response carefully. A female that is actively hunting and well-fed is generally more receptive to mating than one that is stressed, in pre-molt, or has been recently disturbed. Some breeders recommend power-feeding the female—offering extra meals over several weeks—before the introduction to ensure she is in optimal condition and, some believe, to reduce the likelihood of her attacking the male during the mating attempt.

Mature males should be allowed to build a sperm web before being introduced to the female. The sperm web is a small, flat sheet of silk that the male constructs and then deposits sperm onto before loading it into his palpal emboli. This process can take several hours and typically occurs at night. Keepers who observe their male constructing a sperm web can be confident that he is physiologically ready for mating.

The Mating Process

Introducing a male Goliath Birdeater to a female's enclosure is one of the most intense and unpredictable moments in tarantula keeping. The mating process for this species can be rapid or extended, peaceful or violent, and the outcome is never guaranteed. Keepers should be prepared to intervene quickly if the female shows signs of aggression toward the male, as a single strike from an adult female can be fatal to the smaller, more fragile mature male.

The introduction should ideally take place in the female's enclosure, as she will be more comfortable in familiar surroundings and the male's instinct will drive him to approach. The male will typically begin by drumming his legs and pedipalps on the substrate in a rhythmic pattern, sending vibrations through the ground to signal his presence and intentions. If the female is receptive, she may respond with her own drumming or by emerging from her burrow and adopting a raised posture that exposes her underside.

During the actual mating, the male will approach the female head-on, using his tibial hooks to lock her fangs in a raised position while he reaches beneath her body with his pedipalps to transfer sperm to her genital opening. This process may last from a few seconds to several minutes. The keeper should have a long piece of cardboard, a ruler, or a similar flat barrier ready to insert between the spiders if the female attempts to strike after the male has completed the insertion.

After a successful mating, the male will typically retreat rapidly. Keepers should be ready to remove the male from the enclosure as quickly and safely as possible once mating is complete. The post-mating period is extremely dangerous for the male, as the female's predatory instincts may override any temporary tolerance she showed during the mating process. Some breeders choose to attempt multiple pairings over several days to increase the chances of fertilization, but each introduction carries risk.

Egg Sac Development & Incubation

Following a successful mating, the female Goliath Birdeater may produce an egg sac anywhere from several weeks to several months later. The timing varies significantly between individuals and may be influenced by temperature, humidity, and the female's overall condition. Some females produce an egg sac within four to six weeks of mating, while others may take three months or longer. There is no reliable way to predict the exact timeline, and keepers must simply maintain optimal conditions and exercise patience.

Prior to constructing the egg sac, the female will typically spend several days preparing a thick silk mat on the floor of her burrow or in a chosen location within the enclosure. Spiderling Emergence & Separation

When the egg sac reaches full term, the spiderlings will emerge either through the mother's assistance in opening the sac or, in the case of artificial incubation, through the breeder carefully opening it. A healthy Goliath Birdeater egg sac can produce 50 to 200 spiderlings, though the actual number of viable individuals is typically somewhat lower than the total egg count due to natural infertility and developmental failures within the sac.

Newly emerged spiderlings are tiny, pale, and fragile, with leg spans of less than half an inch. They will undergo their first molt within the egg sac or shortly after emergence, transitioning from a larval form called a first instar to a more recognizable spider-like second instar. Spiderlings should not be separated from each other until they have completed this first molt and are actively moving and exploring, as premature separation can stress underdeveloped individuals.

Separation of spiderlings is essential to prevent cannibalism, which begins quickly once the spiderlings become mobile and hungry. Each individual should be housed in its own small container with appropriate substrate, humidity, and ventilation. The logistics of housing 100 or more individual spiderlings can be daunting, and breeders should have all materials prepared well before the anticipated emergence date. The first few weeks after separation are critical for spiderling survival. Refeeding should begin gradually once the egg sac has been opened or removed, starting with smaller prey items and increasing in size and frequency as the female's appetite returns.

Her abdomen may appear noticeably shrunken compared to her pre-breeding state, and it may take several months of regular feeding before she returns to optimal condition. Some females may undergo a post-breeding molt relatively soon after the egg sac cycle, particularly if they were close to their natural molt schedule when breeding occurred. This molt should be treated with extra care, as the female's depleted condition increases the risk of complications.

The mature male's post-breeding trajectory is markedly different. Whether or not the mating was successful, the male will continue to decline physically after his ultimate molt. He may become increasingly restless, refusing food and pacing the enclosure in search of additional mating opportunities. Some males survive for six months to a year or more after mating, while others decline rapidly within weeks. Providing fresh water, occasional food offerings, and a calm environment is the extent of care that can be offered during this final phase.

Breeders should plan ahead for the disposition of spiderlings well before the egg sac is due.
