The juvenile phase of a Chinese mantis spans roughly the third through sixth instars and represents the most dramatic period of physical transformation in the animal's life. During these stages, the mantis undergoes rapid and visible growth with each successive molt, roughly doubling in mass between instars under good feeding conditions. What began as a tiny dark nymph indistinguishable from dozens of siblings becomes an increasingly distinct individual with recognizable proportions and coloration.
Each molt during the juvenile period brings notable changes beyond simple size increase. The thorax elongates significantly, the compound eyes become more prominent and widely spaced, and the raptorial forelegs develop the pronounced spination that makes adult mantids such effective predators. Wing buds begin to appear as small pads on the back during the middle instars and grow progressively larger with each subsequent molt, though they will not become functional until the final molt to adulthood.
Growth rate during the juvenile phase is heavily influenced by temperature and feeding frequency. Mantids kept at the warmer end of their preferred range and fed generously will progress through instars more quickly than those kept cooler or on restricted diets. While faster growth is not inherently better or worse, keepers should be aware that accelerated development shortens the overall lifespan proportionally, since the total number of molts remains fixed regardless of how quickly they occur.
Tracking instar progression can be challenging, especially for keepers raising their first mantis. Measuring total body length after each molt and noting the increasing size of wing buds are the most reliable methods. Keeping a dated log of each molt helps you anticipate future molting times and adjust feeding and environmental conditions proactively.
