Atlas Beetle reproduction begins with the female depositing small, oval eggs deep within a moist substrate of decaying hardwood and leaf litter. Each egg is typically white or slightly translucent, measuring only a few millimeters in length. Females may scatter eggs individually or deposit small clusters over the course of several days, and a single clutch can range from roughly 20 to 50 eggs depending on the health and age of the female.
Proper substrate preparation before egg laying is essential for high hatch rates. The laying medium should consist of well-fermented hardwood flake soil that has been lightly compressed to hold moisture without becoming waterlogged. Maintaining consistent humidity within the egg container is one of the single most important factors during this phase, as eggs that dry out even briefly are unlikely to recover.
Incubation time varies with temperature but generally falls between three and four weeks. Warmer conditions near the upper end of the species' comfortable range can speed development slightly, while cooler temperatures slow it. Avoid opening or disturbing the egg container unnecessarily, as vibrations and sudden temperature swings can reduce viability. Once the eggs begin to show slight swelling and a more opaque coloring, hatching is imminent.
It is best to leave eggs undisturbed in the substrate where they were laid rather than attempting to move them. If separation is necessary for record-keeping or to protect eggs from mold, use a soft brush or small spoon and handle with extreme care. Place isolated eggs into individual cups filled with the same fermented substrate and press a shallow depression to cradle each egg without burying it completely.
