Conversely, excessively rapid growth fueled by overfeeding concentrates can contribute to developmental orthopedic diseases including osteochondritis dissecans and physitis, both of which can have lasting consequences for soundness.
Conformation assessments by a knowledgeable equine professional at regular intervals during the juvenile period provide valuable insight into how the young horse is developing structurally. Minor angular limb deviations that were present at birth often self-correct as the foal grows, but some may require corrective trimming by a farrier or, in more significant cases, veterinary intervention.
