Shavings are generally avoided for foaling stalls, as they can adhere to the wet newborn and may be inhaled. The mare herself provides signs that foaling is approaching. Udder development typically begins two to four weeks before delivery, and waxing of the teats, the appearance of small waxy droplets on the teat ends, often occurs 24 to 48 hours before foaling. Relaxation of the muscles around the tailhead and vulva, a change in the udder secretion from sticky and amber to thin and milky white, and restless behavior are all indicators that delivery is imminent. Some mares show these signs reliably while others give very little warning, so vigilant monitoring during the final weeks is essential.

Postpartum Care

The postpartum period demands close attention to both the mare and the newborn foal. For the mare, the most immediate concern after delivery is the passage of the placenta. The entire placenta should be expelled within three hours of foaling. A retained placenta in a horse is a veterinary emergency that can lead to metritis, septicemia, and laminitis. Once passed, the placenta should be spread out and examined to ensure it is complete, with no missing pieces that could remain in the uterus and cause infection.

The mare's physical recovery from foaling is generally straightforward in healthy individuals, but her nutritional demands increase dramatically as lactation begins. A lactating Shire mare may require up to double her pre-pregnancy caloric intake, with increased protein, calcium, and phosphorus to support milk production. Inadequate nutrition during lactation can rapidly deplete the mare's own body reserves, leading to weight loss, poor milk quality, and reduced immune function.

Monitor the mare's udder daily for signs of mastitis, an infection of the mammary tissue that causes heat, swelling, pain, and changes in milk appearance. A mare with mastitis may resist nursing, which in turn jeopardizes the foal's nutrition. If you notice any udder abnormalities, contact your veterinarian promptly. The mare's vulva and perineal area should also be observed for excessive swelling, discharge, or signs of tearing that may have occurred during delivery.

The mare's return to cycling typically occurs between seven and twelve days postpartum, an event known as foal heat. While it is technically possible to breed the mare during foal heat, many breeders and veterinarians advise waiting until a subsequent cycle to allow the uterus more time to recover and involute fully. This decision should be made in consultation with your veterinarian based on the mare's reproductive health, the ease of the delivery, and your breeding goals.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Responsible breeding of Shire horses carries obligations that extend far beyond the mechanics of reproduction. The Shire is a heritage breed with a relatively small global population, and every breeding decision influences the breed's genetic health, phenotypic integrity, and long-term viability. Sentimentality, convenience, or the desire for a foal should never override objective assessment of whether a particular horse should reproduce. Breeding a mare or stallion with significant conformational faults, hereditary health conditions, or poor temperament perpetuates problems that the resulting foals and their future owners will bear the consequences of.

Planning for the foal's future is an ethical obligation that begins before conception. Every foal produced should have a clear path to a suitable home, whether that is within the breeder's own operation or through a carefully vetted placement with a new owner. The reality of horse ownership is that it is expensive, long-term, and demanding, and not every foal will find or keep a good home throughout its potentially 30-year lifespan. Responsible breeders produce only as many foals as they can confidently place or retain.

Engagement with breed registries and Shire horse societies supports the collective effort to maintain and improve the breed.
