A single brood can produce anywhere from twenty to over eighty fry depending on the size and age of the mother, and the tiny fish will begin exploring their surroundings within minutes of being released.

The most critical concern in the first hours is separating fry from adult fish. Adult swordtails, including the mother, will readily consume newborn fry if given the opportunity. Many keepers use a dedicated breeding or nursery tank that has been cycled and prepared in advance. If a separate tank is not available, dense floating plants or a commercial breeder box can provide temporary refuge while you arrange a more permanent setup.

Water parameters during these first hours should match the conditions of the main tank as closely as possible to avoid shocking the delicate fry. Temperature should be stable between 74 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and the pH should remain in the range of 7.0 to 8.2. Avoid making any sudden changes to water chemistry during this vulnerable window, as even minor fluctuations can prove fatal to newborns.

Their mouths are extremely small at birth, so the food offered must be appropriately sized. Crushed high-quality flake food ground to a fine powder is one of the simplest starting feeds, though it should be supplemented with more nutrient-dense options when possible.

Newly hatched brine shrimp are widely regarded as one of the best first foods for swordtail fry. The movement of live brine shrimp triggers a natural feeding response, and the nutritional profile supports rapid early growth. Microworms and vinegar eels are also excellent live food choices that are easy to culture at home and provide essential proteins and fats during this high-growth phase.

Feeding frequency is more important than portion size during the newborn stage. Fry benefit from being fed small amounts four to six times per day rather than one or two larger feedings. Their tiny stomachs cannot hold much food at once, but their metabolic demands are high as they grow rapidly during these early weeks. Overfeeding in a single session fouls the water quickly, so restraint with each individual feeding is essential.

Uneaten food should be removed promptly after each feeding session. Decomposing food particles release ammonia and other toxins that are especially dangerous in the small volumes of water typically used in nursery setups. At around three to four weeks of age, swordtail fry enter a transitional phase where their fins begin to take on more recognizable proportions. Swordtail fry are far more sensitive to ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate than adult fish, and even trace levels of ammonia can cause gill damage or death in very young fish. A fully cycled nursery tank with an established biological filter is ideal, but care must be taken to ensure that filter intakes do not trap or injure the tiny fry.

Sponge filters are the preferred filtration method for fry tanks because they provide gentle water movement and biological filtration without posing a suction risk. If you must use a hang-on-back or canister filter, covering the intake with a fine mesh or sponge prefilter is essential. Water flow should be kept gentle, as strong currents exhaust small fry and make feeding difficult.

Partial water changes of ten to fifteen percent every other day help maintain stable water chemistry without causing drastic shifts that could stress the fry. Use a slow drip method when adding replacement water, and ensure that the new water is temperature-matched and dechlorinated. Sudden temperature swings are a common cause of fry loss that is entirely preventable with careful preparation.

The nursery tank should include some form of cover or structure for the fry to hide in. Java moss, hornwort, and other fine-leaved floating plants serve double duty by providing shelter and hosting populations of infusoria and microorganisms that fry can graze on between scheduled feedings. Avoid sharp decorations or rough substrates that could injure delicate fins.

Early Socialization & Tank Dynamics

Swordtail fry are naturally social and will begin interacting with one another early in life. Even within the first week, you may observe fry gathering loosely in groups, particularly near food sources or in sheltered areas of the tank. This schooling instinct is a survival behavior that helps protect individual fry from predation in the wild and generally indicates healthy social development in captivity.

As the fry grow, competition for food can become an issue in densely stocked nursery tanks. Dominant or faster-growing fry may monopolize feeding areas, leaving smaller siblings at a disadvantage. Spreading food across multiple locations in the tank helps ensure that all fry have access to nutrition, and observing feeding behavior closely allows you to identify any individuals that may need supplemental attention.

Avoiding overcrowding is important from the very beginning. While swordtail broods can be large, housing too many fry in a small volume of water leads to elevated waste levels, increased stress, and stunted growth. A general guideline is to provide at least one gallon of water for every five to ten fry during the newborn stage, increasing the space allocation as they grow.

Fry should not be introduced to tanks containing adult fish until they are large enough to avoid being eaten. For swordtails, this typically means waiting until the juveniles are at least three-quarters of an inch in length, though larger is always safer. Even peaceful adult swordtails will consume fry that fit in their mouths, so erring on the side of caution protects your investment of time and care.

Health Screening & Common Issues

Healthy swordtail fry are active swimmers with clear eyes, smooth bodies, and steady appetites. During the first few weeks, you should observe the fry daily for any signs of distress such as clamped fins, lethargy, loss of appetite, or unusual swimming patterns like spiraling or resting on the bottom for extended periods. Early detection of problems gives you the best chance of intervening successfully.

One of the most common issues in fry tanks is fungal infection, which typically appears as white cottony patches on the body or fins. Fungal problems are almost always secondary to poor water quality or physical injury, so the first response should be to check and improve water parameters. Mild cases often resolve on their own once conditions are corrected, but persistent infections may require treatment with aquarium-safe antifungal preparations used at reduced dosages appropriate for fry.

Belly slider syndrome, where fry are unable to swim properly and slide along the bottom of the tank, occasionally occurs in livebearer broods. Affected fry typically have swim bladder defects that prevent normal buoyancy. Unfortunately, this condition is rarely correctable, and affected individuals generally do not survive. Removing them from the nursery tank prevents decomposition from affecting water quality for healthy siblings.

Parasitic infections are less common in well-maintained nursery tanks but can be introduced through live foods or contaminated equipment. Quarantining live food cultures and rinsing all equipment before use in the fry tank are simple preventive measures that significantly reduce the risk of introducing pathogens to vulnerable newborns.

When to Worry

Some degree of fry loss is normal and expected in any livebearer brood. Even under ideal conditions, not every fry in a large brood will survive to adulthood. Losses of ten to twenty percent during the first two weeks are within the range of normal attrition and should not cause alarm if the majority of the brood appears healthy and is growing steadily.

However, sudden or widespread die-offs are a clear signal that something is wrong with the environment. If you lose multiple fry within a short period, immediately test the water for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH. A spike in any of these parameters is the most likely culprit, and an emergency water change of twenty to thirty percent should be performed while you investigate the root cause.

Fry that stop eating entirely or that develop visible abnormalities such as curved spines, bloated abdomens, or discolored patches should be isolated from the main group. While some conditions are not contagious, separating symptomatic individuals allows you to monitor them more closely and protects the rest of the brood from any transmissible illness.

If you notice persistent problems despite maintaining excellent water quality and appropriate feeding, consulting with an experienced aquarist or a veterinarian who specializes in aquatic animals is worthwhile. Some issues, particularly those related to genetics or internal parasites, may not be resolvable through husbandry adjustments alone, and professional guidance can save both time and fish.
