If you choose to let the parents raise the fry, minimize disturbances to the tank and ensure the parents are well-fed with high-quality foods so they are less tempted to view the fry as a food source. Remove any tank mates that might stress the parents or threaten the brood. A dedicated breeding tank with only the pair and their fry gives the best results for natural rearing.

If parental care breaks down or you are working with a pair that consistently consumes its offspring, you can artificially hatch the eggs by carefully removing the spawning surface to a separate container with matched water parameters, an air stone for gentle circulation, and a few drops of methylene blue to prevent fungus. Artificial rearing requires more attentive feeding schedules but can yield high survival rates with diligent care.

Health Monitoring & Common Issues

Fry are vulnerable to a number of health challenges that rarely affect adult fish, and close daily observation is essential during the newborn period. The most common cause of fry loss in the first week is poor water quality, which manifests as lethargy, loss of appetite, and fry gathering at the surface gasping. If you observe these signs, perform an immediate small water change with temperature-matched water and test your parameters.

Fungal infections can devastate a clutch of eggs before they even hatch. Eggs that turn white and opaque have been colonized by fungus and should be gently removed with a pipette to prevent the fungus from spreading to healthy eggs nearby. A small amount of methylene blue added to the water around the eggs can help suppress fungal growth without harming the developing embryos.

Velvet disease and ich are two parasitic conditions that can affect very young fry. Because fry cannot tolerate the full-strength medications used for adult fish, treatment options are limited. Not every spawn will be successful, and knowing when something has gone genuinely wrong versus when natural attrition is occurring saves a great deal of unnecessary stress. Losses much beyond that range, however, suggest a systemic issue that needs to be addressed.

If the majority of fry stop eating simultaneously, the problem is almost certainly environmental rather than disease-related. Check temperature, ammonia, nitrite, and pH immediately. A sudden temperature drop overnight due to a heater malfunction is one of the most common and most devastating events in a fry tank. Investing in a reliable, adjustable heater with a backup thermometer is well worth the cost.

This can happen when appropriate first foods were not available or when water conditions were too far outside the acceptable range for the fry to feed actively. Preparing your infusoria culture or brine shrimp hatchery well in advance of the expected hatch date is critical.

If you notice fry developing visible deformities such as curved spines, missing gill covers, or drastically undersized individuals that fail to grow despite adequate food, these are typically genetic issues rather than husbandry problems. While it can be disheartening, culling severely deformed fry is considered a responsible practice by experienced breeders, as these individuals generally experience poor quality of life and should not be used for future breeding.
