A fully cycled tank is essential before introducing fry, and you should test water parameters daily during the first two weeks using a reliable liquid test kit.

Water changes in a fry tank should be performed frequently but carefully. A schedule of 10 to 20 percent water changes every other day is ideal during the first few weeks. Sudden mass die-offs almost always point to a water quality crisis. Test your parameters immediately if you find multiple dead or dying fry at once. Ammonia spikes are the most common culprit in new or overstocked fry tanks, and even a brief spike can be devastating. Temperature swings caused by a malfunctioning heater or placement near a window with direct sunlight can also cause rapid losses.
