It is critical not to disturb the tank during this period, as strong currents or vibrations can scatter the fry and separate them from the nest.

The male Pearl Gourami typically remains attentive to the nest, retrieving any fry that fall and returning them to the bubbles. This paternal behavior is normal and should be allowed to continue undisturbed. However, the female should have been removed shortly after spawning, as she may eat the eggs or fry. Keep lighting dim and avoid tapping on the glass or performing any water changes during this initial phase.

Water conditions must be pristine and stable. The hatching tank should be maintained at 80–82°F with minimal filtration — a sponge filter set to its lowest output is ideal. The water level should be kept shallow, typically around six to eight inches, to reduce the distance fry must travel to reach the surface for air. Pearl Gouramis are labyrinth fish, and even fry will eventually need access to atmospheric air as their labyrinth organ develops.

Observe the nest carefully without getting too close to the glass. Healthy fry will appear as tiny slivers clinging to the bubbles or hanging vertically just beneath the surface. Any eggs that turn white or opaque are unfertilized and should be gently removed with a pipette if accessible, as they can promote fungal growth that may spread to viable eggs and fry.

Having the right foods prepared and available before hatching occurs is essential to avoiding starvation losses.

Infusoria is the ideal first food for Pearl Gourami fry. These microscopic organisms are small enough for the fry to consume and can be cultured at home using blanched lettuce or hay placed in a jar of aged aquarium water several days before the expected hatch date. Commercial liquid fry foods designed for egg-layer fry can also serve as a substitute, though live infusoria generally produces better growth rates and survival.

After five to seven days on infusoria, fry should be large enough to accept freshly hatched baby brine shrimp. This is an excellent high-protein food that promotes rapid, healthy growth. Hatch brine shrimp eggs daily to ensure a constant supply of nauplii. Feed small amounts multiple times per day rather than one large feeding, as uneaten food will foul the water quickly in a fry tank.

Microworms can be introduced alongside or shortly after brine shrimp as an additional live food source. These sink to the bottom and provide nutrition for any fry that tend to feed in the lower portions of the water column. As fry grow, finely crushed high-quality flake food can be gradually introduced, though live foods should remain the primary diet for at least the first three to four weeks to ensure strong development.

Developmental Milestones

During the first week, Pearl Gourami fry transition from yolk-sac absorption to free-swimming. By day three or four, most fry will have detached from the bubble nest and begun swimming horizontally in short bursts. Their movements are initially clumsy and erratic, but coordination improves rapidly. By the end of the second week, fry will have grown noticeably and their bodies will begin to take on a more recognizable fish shape. Fins become more defined, and the fry start showing more deliberate feeding behavior, actively pursuing food particles rather than simply drifting into them. Growth rates can vary significantly among siblings, and some size disparity within a clutch is normal.

Around three to four weeks of age, fry begin developing pigmentation. The characteristic pearlescent spots that give this species its name will not yet be visible, but a faint silvery or slightly brownish coloration starts to appear. The labyrinth organ also begins developing during this period, and fry can occasionally be observed making trips to the surface to gulp air. Ensuring a tight-fitting lid that maintains warm, humid air above the water surface is important for healthy labyrinth organ development.

By six to eight weeks, fry typically reach roughly half an inch in length. At this size they are significantly more robust and less vulnerable to sudden water quality fluctuations. Growth becomes more visually apparent on a weekly basis, and the fry begin to display early social behaviors, loosely grouping together rather than dispersing randomly throughout the tank.

Water Quality & Environment

Fry tanks demand meticulous attention to water quality. Pearl Gourami fry are far less tolerant of ammonia and nitrite than adults, and even trace amounts can prove lethal. A fully cycled sponge filter is the best filtration choice because it provides biological filtration without creating suction or currents strong enough to trap fry. If the breeding tank was set up recently, seeding the sponge filter with media from an established aquarium can jumpstart the nitrogen cycle.

Water changes must be performed carefully and frequently. Small daily water changes of five to ten percent are preferable to larger, less frequent changes. Use aged, dechlorinated water matched to the tank temperature — even a difference of two or three degrees can stress fragile fry. A slow drip method using airline tubing is the safest way to add replacement water without creating disruptive currents.

Maintain the temperature between 80 and 82°F using a reliable, adjustable heater. Temperature stability matters more than hitting an exact number, so invest in a heater with a precise thermostat and verify it with a separate thermometer. The pH should remain between 6.0 and 7.0, and water hardness should be kept soft to moderately soft, reflecting the species' natural habitat in the slow-moving, acidic waters of Southeast Asia.

Keep the tank dimly lit during the first two weeks. Bright lighting stresses fry and can encourage algae blooms that further compromise water quality. A small amount of floating plants such as water sprite or duckweed provides shelter and helps absorb excess nutrients. Avoid any décor with sharp edges or small openings where fry could become trapped.

Tank Setup & Separation

A dedicated fry-rearing tank is strongly recommended over attempting to raise fry in a community setting. A tank of ten to twenty gallons provides ample space for a typical Pearl Gourami clutch while remaining manageable for the frequent maintenance fry require. Bare-bottom tanks are easiest to keep clean, as uneaten food and waste are immediately visible and can be siphoned out with a length of airline tubing.

If the fry were spawned in a separate breeding tank, they can remain there for rearing. If spawning occurred in a community tank, the bubble nest and surrounding fry should be carefully transferred to the rearing tank using a shallow container — never a net, which can injure the delicate fry. Match the water parameters exactly between the two tanks before transferring.

As fry grow and size differences emerge, it may become necessary to sort them into groups. Larger fry can outcompete smaller siblings for food and, in some cases, may prey on them. Separating the largest individuals into a different container around the three-week mark can improve overall survival rates for the clutch. Simple plastic containers or divided tanks work well for this purpose.

Avoid overstocking the fry tank. Pearl Gouramis can produce several hundred eggs per spawn, but attempting to raise all of them in a single small tank leads to stunted growth, poor water quality, and increased mortality. Culling the weakest fry or distributing them to other aquarists early on results in healthier, stronger fish overall. Plan ahead for how many juveniles you can realistically house or rehome.

Health Monitoring & Common Issues

The most common cause of fry loss in Pearl Gouramis is starvation during the first feeding transition. Fry that fail to begin eating within 24 hours of becoming free-swimming rarely survive. Signs of successful feeding include visibly rounded bellies and active, purposeful swimming. Fry that remain thin, lethargic, or hover motionless near the surface are likely not getting enough food and may need smaller food particles or more frequent feedings.

Fungal infections can affect fry, particularly in tanks with poor water quality or where dead eggs were not promptly removed. A white cottony growth on the body is the telltale sign. Mild cases can sometimes be addressed by improving water quality alone, but persistent infections may require treatment with a mild antifungal agent safe for fry. Always consult a veterinarian experienced with fish before adding any medication to a fry tank.

Velvet disease, caused by the parasite Piscinoodinium, is another concern in warm, still fry tanks. Affected fry develop a fine golden or rusty dust-like coating on their bodies and may clamp their fins or rub against surfaces. Early detection and treatment are critical, as velvet can devastate an entire clutch within days. Maintaining clean water and avoiding temperature swings are the best preventive measures.

Watch for swim bladder issues, which can manifest as fry swimming erratically, spiraling, or resting on the bottom unable to maintain buoyancy. While some fry are born with developmental defects that affect the swim bladder, overfeeding and poor water quality can also contribute. Affected fry that do not improve within a few days are unlikely to develop normally and may need to be humanely culled to prevent suffering.

When to Worry

A certain level of fry mortality is normal and expected, even under optimal conditions. Pearl Gourami spawns can number in the hundreds, and nature dictates that not all will survive. Losing ten to twenty percent of a clutch in the first week is within the range of normal. However, sudden mass die-offs, where dozens of fry perish within hours, indicate a serious environmental problem that demands immediate investigation.

If fry are dying in large numbers, test the water immediately for ammonia, nitrite, and pH. Even small spikes in ammonia or nitrite can be catastrophic for fry. Perform an immediate partial water change using properly conditioned, temperature-matched water. Check the heater to ensure the temperature has not drifted outside the safe range, and verify that the filter is functioning correctly.

Fry that stop eating, become listless, or congregate at the surface gasping are showing signs of distress. Surface gasping in labyrinth fish fry can be normal in moderation, but persistent gasping combined with lethargy suggests low dissolved oxygen, high ammonia, or disease. Increase surface agitation slightly if oxygen levels are a concern, but be careful not to create currents strong enough to exhaust the fry.

Any time you observe unusual symptoms across multiple fry simultaneously — such as clamped fins, white spots, discoloration, or erratic swimming — treat it as an urgent situation. Isolate visibly affected individuals if possible and consult a veterinarian or experienced aquarist. Early intervention is almost always more effective than waiting to see if the problem resolves on its own, especially with fragile fry that have very little physiological reserve.
