Mystery snail eggs hatch after roughly two to four weeks of incubation inside the egg clutch, which the mother deposits above the waterline. When the tiny hatchlings emerge, they are incredibly small — often no larger than a pinhead — and nearly translucent. During the first twenty-four hours, hatchlings will begin to drop from the clutch into the water below, or you may gently assist by misting the clutch to soften it once you see movement inside the eggs.
It is critical that the water they fall into is safe and calm. Strong filtration currents can sweep hatchlings into intake tubes, so covering filter intakes with fine sponge pre-filters is essential before hatching occurs. The water level should be close enough to the clutch that the drop does not injure the tiny snails, but not so high that it submerges the eggs, which would drown the developing embryos.
During these initial hours, hatchlings will begin exploring surfaces and instinctively rasp at biofilm and algae. They do not require supplemental feeding right away, as they will consume their egg casing and any microscopic organisms they encounter. Resist the urge to handle them, as their shells are paper-thin and extremely fragile at this stage.
Observe the clutch carefully for any eggs that fail to hatch. Unfertilized or underdeveloped eggs may begin to mold, and removing these promptly prevents contamination of the water and protects the surviving hatchlings from fungal exposure.
