Lionfish reproduce by releasing buoyant egg masses that float near the surface. Once the eggs hatch, the resulting larvae are extremely small and nearly transparent, drifting in the water column as part of the planktonic community. In a captive setting, the first 48 hours are critical because the fry are extraordinarily fragile and sensitive to even minor fluctuations in water chemistry. Maintaining stable salinity, temperature, and pH during this window is essential for survival.
During this initial period, the fry still carry a small yolk sac that provides their first nutrients. They will not actively feed until this yolk reserve is absorbed, which typically takes between 24 and 48 hours after hatching. Resist the urge to introduce food too early, as uneaten particles will degrade water quality rapidly in a rearing tank.
If you are raising lionfish fry intentionally, a dedicated larval rearing tank is strongly recommended. The main display tank presents far too many hazards, including filtration intakes, aggressive tankmates, and uncontrolled water flow. A smaller, gently aerated container with matched water parameters gives the larvae their best chance at survival.
Keep lighting subdued during these first days. Lionfish larvae are photosensitive, and harsh lighting can cause stress responses that weaken their already limited energy reserves. A low-wattage ambient light on a natural day-night cycle is sufficient.
