Kuhli Loach eggs are small, translucent green spheres that are often scattered among floating plants or attached to root systems near the water's surface. After fertilization, the eggs typically hatch within 24 to 48 hours depending on water temperature. The newly emerged fry are extremely tiny, nearly transparent, and will initially rest on the substrate or cling to plant surfaces as they absorb the remainder of their yolk sac.
During this critical window, it is essential that the fry are housed in a separate rearing tank or a well-protected breeding enclosure within the main aquarium. Adult Kuhli Loaches and other tank inhabitants will readily consume the eggs and fry if given access. A small, densely planted tank with gentle filtration provides the safest environment for these vulnerable newborns.
Water quality must be pristine from the outset. Ammonia and nitrite levels should read zero, and nitrates should remain as low as possible. Even slight fluctuations in water chemistry can prove fatal to newly hatched fry. Perform small, careful water changes using aged water that matches the rearing tank's temperature and pH to avoid shocking the delicate hatchlings.
Avoid any strong water current in the fry tank. Kuhli Loach fry are weak swimmers and can be easily overwhelmed by filter intake or turbulent flow. A sponge filter set to its lowest output is the ideal filtration choice, as it provides biological filtration without creating dangerous suction or currents.
