Killifish fry emerge from their eggs in slightly different ways depending on whether they belong to an annual or non-annual species. Annual killifish eggs undergo a period of diapause in a peat or soil substrate before being reintroduced to water, at which point hatching can occur within minutes to hours. Non-annual species typically hatch from eggs attached to plants or spawning mops after an incubation period of one to three weeks. Regardless of species type, the moments immediately following hatching are critical for survival.
Newly hatched killifish fry are extremely small, often measuring just a few millimeters in length. They carry a yolk sac that provides nourishment for the first day or two of life. During this time, fry may rest near the bottom of the container or cling to surfaces as they absorb the remaining yolk nutrients. It is important not to introduce food until the yolk sac has been fully absorbed, as uneaten food will foul the water and create dangerous conditions for the fragile fry.
The hatching container should be kept in a calm, dimly lit area free from vibration and sudden temperature changes. Even minor environmental disturbances can stress newly hatched fry and increase early mortality. Keeping the water shallow, generally no more than a few inches deep, makes it easier for the tiny fry to reach the surface and access food once they are ready to begin feeding.
Keepers who are hatching annual species from stored peat should pay careful attention to the wetting process. Water temperature, chemistry, and even light exposure can influence hatching rates. Adding a small amount of aged tank water rather than fresh tap water helps buffer the fry against chemical shock during those vulnerable first moments.
