Bacterial infections can also affect fry, presenting as lethargy, loss of appetite, reddened areas on the body, or rapid breathing at the surface. If multiple fry are showing symptoms simultaneously, the cause is almost certainly environmental rather than contagious, and a thorough water quality test should be performed immediately. Consult a veterinarian experienced in aquatic species before adding any medications to a fry tank, as many treatments that are safe for adults can be toxic to young fish at standard dosages.

Observing the fry during feeding is one of the best health monitoring practices available. Healthy fry are active, responsive to food, and grow at a relatively consistent rate.
