The most common early indicator of end-stage decline is a sustained loss of appetite. While a senior hillstream loach may eat less than it did in its prime, a fish that stops eating entirely for more than a few days, particularly when offered its preferred foods placed directly in its resting area, is likely experiencing a systemic decline. Weight loss that continues despite food availability and good water quality confirms that the body is no longer processing nutrition effectively.
Physical deterioration becomes increasingly visible as a hillstream loach nears the end of life. The body becomes noticeably emaciated, with the outline of the skeletal structure visible through the skin, especially along the spine and behind the head. Coloration fades significantly, and the skin may develop a dull, grayish cast. Fin edges may erode without any visible infection, and the sucker disc may lose its ability to maintain grip on surfaces.
Behavioral changes in a dying hillstream loach include an inability to maintain position in current, drifting or tumbling when flow pushes against the body, and spending long periods lying on the substrate in areas of minimal current rather than clinging to vertical or elevated surfaces. Loss of the righting reflex, where the fish tilts or rolls onto its side, is a late-stage sign that indicates severe systemic failure. A fish displaying this sign is very near the end of its life.
