Goldfish eggs typically hatch within two to seven days after fertilization, depending on water temperature. Warmer water in the range of 68 to 74 degrees Fahrenheit tends to accelerate hatching, while cooler temperatures slow the process. When fry first emerge, they are tiny, translucent, and barely visible to the naked eye. They will attach themselves to plants, tank walls, or any available surface using a small adhesive gland on their heads.
During the first 48 hours, newly hatched fry survive entirely on their yolk sac, a small nutrient reserve attached to their belly. This yolk sac provides all the energy and nutrition they need, so no external feeding is required or recommended during this period. Disturbing the fry or introducing food too early can actually foul the water and create dangerous conditions.
The most important task during this initial window is maintaining stable water conditions. Any fluctuation in temperature, pH, or ammonia levels can be fatal to fry at this stage. Keep the tank covered to prevent drafts, and avoid making any sudden changes to the environment. Gentle observation is fine, but resist the urge to intervene unless you notice obvious problems like fungus on unhatched eggs nearby.
If you are raising fry in the same tank where spawning occurred, it is critical to remove the adult goldfish before the eggs hatch. Adult goldfish are notorious egg and fry predators and will consume their own offspring without hesitation. A separate rearing tank or a mesh divider within the main tank can protect the vulnerable newborns.
