Wild-caught rams and first-generation captive-bred fish from wild stock tend to be the most reliable parents, exhibiting strong, instinctive care behaviors that include fanning, guarding, herding, and mouth-brooding individual fry that stray from the group. Multi-generation captive-bred fish, which make up the majority of rams available in the hobby, have often had parental instincts diluted through selective breeding for color and body shape.

Egg eating and fry consumption are frustratingly common behaviors in captive German Blue Rams, particularly during the first few spawning attempts. This is believed to be partly instinctive, as wild rams will consume their eggs rather than allow them to fall to predators, and partly a consequence of stress in the captive environment. First-time parents should be given at least three to four opportunities to successfully raise a clutch before the keeper considers intervening with artificial methods.

Flooding a local market with poorly raised or genetically compromised fish does a disservice to the hobby and to the fish themselves. Focus on quality over quantity, raise your fry to a healthy size before rehoming them, and be transparent with buyers about the lineage and care history of the fish you sell or trade.
