Frontosa are maternal mouthbrooders, meaning the female carries fertilized eggs in her mouth for approximately three to four weeks before releasing fully formed fry. Unlike many other cichlid species, Frontosa fry emerge at a relatively advanced stage of development, having already absorbed a significant portion of their yolk sac while inside the mother's buccal cavity. This extended incubation period gives them a notable advantage in terms of size and readiness compared to egg-scattering species.
When the fry are first released, they typically measure between one and one and a half centimeters in length. They may appear pale or semi-transparent, with only faint hints of the dark vertical banding that will become their signature marking as they mature. During the first forty-eight hours, fry tend to cluster near the substrate or hide among rockwork, relying on what remains of their yolk reserves for nourishment.
It is essential to observe the mother closely during this period. In some cases, females will attempt to recollect fry into their mouths if they sense danger. While this behavior is protective in the wild, it can lead to accidental ingestion or prolonged stress in captivity. Many experienced keepers choose to strip the fry from the mother's mouth a few days before natural release or to separate the female into a dedicated brooding tank to ensure the safety of the young.
The first few days set the tone for long-term survival. Fry that are released into a calm, dimly lit environment with minimal water current tend to show stronger feeding responses and lower mortality rates than those dropped into busy community tanks. Preparing a proper nursery space before the fry arrive is one of the most important steps a keeper can take.
