Feeding Newborn Fry

Their mouths are extremely small, so the food offered must be appropriately sized. Crushed high-quality flake food ground into a fine powder is one of the most accessible first foods for new fry keepers. The powder should be fine enough to create a slight cloud when sprinkled on the water surface, allowing the fry to pick at particles as they drift.

Baby brine shrimp, freshly hatched from decapsulated eggs, are an excellent live food option that promotes rapid growth and vibrant coloration from an early age. Microworms and vinegar eels are also outstanding choices, as they remain alive in the water column and are the perfect size for tiny fry mouths. These live foods trigger a strong feeding response and provide superior nutrition compared to prepared foods alone. The fry become noticeably more active and social, often forming small groups that swim together through the tank. Their bodies begin to fill out, losing some of the extreme slenderness characteristic of newly born fry. The fry tank does not need to be elaborate, but certain conditions are essential for survival and healthy development. A five to ten gallon tank is sufficient for raising a batch of fry, and it should be equipped with a sponge filter rather than a hang-on-back or canister filter. Sponge filters provide gentle water circulation without creating strong currents that can exhaust tiny fry, and the sponge surface itself becomes a grazing area where fry can pick at beneficial microorganisms and biofilm.

Water parameters should closely match those of the main tank to avoid shocking the fry during transfer. Endler's Livebearers thrive in water temperatures between 74 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, with a pH range of 6.7 to 8.5. They are adaptable fish, but fry are less tolerant of parameter swings than adults. A reliable heater with an accurate thermostat is important for maintaining stable temperatures, especially in rooms where ambient temperature fluctuates throughout the day.

Adult Endlers, including the mother, will readily consume newborn fry if they encounter them in open water. In a well-planted tank with abundant hiding places, some fry will naturally survive without intervention, but survival rates are significantly higher when fry are deliberately separated from adults.

The simplest separation strategy is to move the visibly pregnant female into a dedicated birthing tank shortly before she is due to drop. Signs of imminent birth include a dramatically swollen belly, a darkened gravid spot near the anal fin, and the female isolating herself from the group or hovering near the bottom of the tank. After she gives birth, the mother should be returned to the main tank promptly to reduce her stress and prevent her from consuming the fry.

For keepers who prefer not to move the mother, dense floating plants create an effective natural nursery within the main tank. Floating mats of water lettuce, frogbit, or hornwort provide a tangle of roots and leaves where fry can hide above the reach of most adult fish. Some hobbyists also use commercially available fry traps or mesh breeders attached inside the main tank, though these should be used as temporary measures rather than long-term housing, as the restricted space and reduced water flow can hinder fry development if they remain confined for too long.

Regardless of the method chosen, the goal is to give the fry a safe environment for the first three to four weeks of life. By the time they reach roughly half an inch in length, they are generally too large to be eaten by adult Endlers and can be safely introduced or returned to the main tank.

Health Monitoring & Common Issues

Newborn Endler fry are surprisingly resilient when kept in clean water with adequate food, but they are not immune to health problems. The most common issue in the first days of life is failure to thrive, where individual fry appear lethargic, refuse to eat, or remain at the bottom of the tank while their siblings swim actively. These fry may have been born with internal defects or may have sustained injury during birth. While it is natural to want to save every fry, some losses in the first few days are normal and expected even under ideal conditions.

Fungal infections can occasionally affect newborn fry, appearing as white cottony patches on the body or fins. These infections are almost always secondary to poor water quality or physical injury. Maintaining pristine water conditions through regular water changes and careful feeding is the most effective prevention. If fungal issues arise, improving water quality alone often resolves the problem. For persistent cases, consult a veterinarian experienced with fish for appropriate treatment options.

Keepers should also watch for signs of swim bladder issues, which may present as fry swimming erratically, floating at the surface, or struggling to maintain their position in the water column. Healthy fry are active, alert, and eager to eat, so any deviation from this behavior warrants a closer look at water quality and environmental conditions.

When to Worry

While minor fry losses are a normal part of livebearer keeping, certain signs indicate a systemic problem that requires immediate attention. If multiple fry are dying within a short period, the first step is always to test the water. Elevated ammonia or nitrite levels are the most frequent culprits behind sudden mass fry death, and an emergency water change of twenty to thirty percent should be performed immediately if either parameter is detectable.

Clamped fins, where the fry hold their fins tightly against their bodies rather than fanning them out naturally, are an early stress indicator. This can signal poor water quality, temperature fluctuations, or the presence of parasites. Similarly, fry that are gasping at the surface or hanging listlessly near the waterline may be experiencing low dissolved oxygen levels, which can occur in overstocked fry tanks or tanks with inadequate surface agitation.

A sudden refusal to eat across the entire group of fry is another warning sign that should not be ignored. While individual fry may skip a feeding, a collective appetite loss typically points to an environmental stressor. Check the water temperature, test all parameters, and examine the tank for any obvious issues such as a malfunctioning heater, a dead fish decomposing out of sight, or a filter that has stopped working.
