Mature discus communicate through a sophisticated repertoire of visual signals. Darkening of the body color, intensification of vertical bars, and lateral displays where the fish presents its broadside to a rival are all part of the normal social vocabulary. Understanding these signals helps keepers distinguish normal social interaction from genuine distress. A fish displaying dominant coloration and posture to a rival is behaving naturally, while a fish that remains persistently darkened and withdrawn is likely experiencing chronic stress.

Conversely, excessive roundness beyond the natural disc shape can indicate overfeeding or fluid retention related to organ dysfunction.

The eyes of healthy adult discus should be clear, proportionate to the body, and free of cloudiness or swelling. Disproportionately large eyes relative to body size in an adult fish, sometimes called pop-eye or bug-eye, can indicate that the fish was stunted during its juvenile growth phase. While this condition is not treatable in adults, affected fish can still live healthy and comfortable lives with proper care.
