Convict cichlid eggs typically hatch within two to four days of being laid, depending on water temperature. The newly hatched fry, called wrigglers, remain attached to the substrate or the surface where the eggs were deposited. The particles must be small enough to fit into the fry's mouths, which are remarkably tiny at this stage. Feed the fry small amounts several times a day rather than one or two large feedings. Three to five feedings spread throughout the day help maintain steady growth and reduce the risk of water quality issues caused by uneaten food accumulating on the substrate. After each feeding, observe the fry for a few minutes to gauge whether they are actively eating. If food is settling to the bottom untouched, you are likely offering too much at once.

Water quality becomes critically important once feeding begins. Uneaten food decomposes quickly and can cause dangerous ammonia and nitrite spikes in the confined space of a fry tank. Use a gentle sponge filter to provide biological filtration without creating currents strong enough to sweep the tiny fry around the tank. Perform small, frequent water changes of about ten to fifteen percent every other day, using water that has been temperature-matched and dechlorinated.

Within the first week of free-swimming, you should notice the fry becoming more confident in their movements and beginning to explore a wider area of the tank. Their bodies will start to take on a slightly darker pigmentation, moving away from the initial translucent appearance.

By the end of the second week, the fry will have roughly doubled in size from their hatching length. Their fins begin to develop more defined shapes, and you may start to see the faintest hints of the vertical barring pattern that gives convict cichlids their common name. At this point, the fry are typically large enough to accept slightly larger food items such as daphnia or larger brine shrimp.

Around three to four weeks of age, the fry undergo a noticeable growth spurt. Their coloring becomes more distinct, and individual size differences within the brood become apparent. Faster-growing fry may begin to display early territorial behavior, nudging smaller siblings away from preferred feeding spots. This is normal and part of the natural hierarchy that develops within a cohort.

By six weeks, the fry are generally considered to have passed through the most vulnerable phase of their development. Tank Setup & Water Parameters

A dedicated fry-rearing tank does not need to be large. A ten to twenty gallon aquarium is sufficient for raising a single brood of convict cichlid fry through their first several weeks. The tank should be equipped with a sponge filter, which provides gentle biological filtration without posing a risk of sucking up the tiny fry. Avoid hang-on-back filters or canister filters with exposed intake tubes unless they are fitted with fine mesh pre-filter sponges.

Maintain the water temperature between 78 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, which encourages optimal growth and metabolism in the developing fry. A reliable heater with an accurate thermostat is essential, as temperature fluctuations can stress young fish and make them more susceptible to disease. The pH should be kept between 6.8 and 7.8, and total hardness in a moderate range, both of which are well within the tolerance of this adaptable species.

Keep the tank bottom bare or use a very thin layer of fine sand. A bare bottom makes it much easier to spot and remove uneaten food, monitor waste accumulation, and perform targeted cleaning with a small siphon. Decorations should be minimal during the fry stage. A few small pieces of driftwood or smooth stones can provide visual barriers that reduce stress, but avoid complex hardscapes where food can become trapped and rot.

Lighting should be moderate. Excessively bright lighting can stress fry and promote algae blooms that compromise water quality. A simple low-wattage LED fixture on a timer set for eight to ten hours per day is ideal. If the rearing tank is in a room with significant natural light, position it away from direct sunlight to avoid temperature swings and algae problems.

Parental Behavior & Brood Care

One of the most fascinating aspects of raising convict cichlids is observing their remarkable parental instincts. Both the male and female participate actively in caring for the fry, a behavior that sets cichlids apart from the vast majority of aquarium fish. The female typically stays closest to the brood, herding wandering fry back to the group and fanning them to maintain water circulation, while the male patrols the perimeter and drives off any perceived threats.

The parents communicate with their fry through a combination of body movements and subtle fin signals. You may notice the female performing a distinctive shimmying motion near the substrate, which signals the fry to settle down and stay close. When the parents begin moving to a new location in the tank, the fry follow in a tight cloud, responding to visual cues from the adults.

Parental care in convict cichlids typically lasts four to six weeks under aquarium conditions. As the fry grow larger and more independent, the parents gradually reduce their protective behavior. In many cases, the pair will begin preparing to spawn again, and at this point the previous brood may be seen as competition rather than offspring. It is wise to separate the fry from the parents before this transition occurs to prevent aggression toward the juveniles.

First-time parents sometimes eat their initial brood or fail to provide adequate care. This is not uncommon and does not indicate a permanent behavioral flaw. Most pairs improve with each successive spawning, and by the second or third brood, their parental skills are typically well established. If you are raising fry from inexperienced parents, be prepared to intervene by moving the fry to a separate rearing tank if the parents show signs of neglect or aggression toward the brood.

Health Monitoring & Disease Prevention

Convict cichlid fry are generally hardy compared to many other species, but their small size makes them vulnerable to rapid declines if conditions deteriorate. The most common health threats to fry are related to water quality rather than infectious disease. Ammonia and nitrite poisoning can kill an entire brood within hours, so testing the water every day or two during the first few weeks is strongly recommended.

Watch for signs of distress such as fry clustering at the water surface gasping, lethargy, loss of appetite, or a whitish film developing on their bodies. Any of these symptoms should prompt an immediate check of water parameters followed by a partial water change if ammonia or nitrite levels are detectable. Fungal infections can occasionally affect weakened fry and appear as cottony white patches on the body or fins.

Maintaining stable, clean conditions is the single most effective form of disease prevention for young fish. Avoid overfeeding, remove uneaten food promptly, and keep up with regular water changes. If you need to treat a sick fry tank, consult a veterinarian experienced with fish or a knowledgeable aquatics specialist before adding any medications, as fry are far more sensitive to chemical treatments than adult fish.

As the fry grow, begin observing them individually for any that appear stunted, deformed, or unable to compete for food. Runts that consistently fail to eat may need to be separated into a smaller container where they can feed without competition. Spinal deformities or swim bladder issues occasionally appear in a small percentage of any brood and are usually genetic in origin rather than caused by husbandry errors.

When to Worry

Even with attentive care, some degree of fry loss is normal and expected. Convict cichlids produce large broods, sometimes numbering in the hundreds, and not every individual is destined to survive. A mortality rate of ten to twenty percent during the first two weeks is within the range of normal for a well-managed fry tank. However, sudden or widespread losses should always be investigated.

If you notice a significant number of fry dying within a short period, the first step is to test the water immediately. Ammonia and nitrite should read zero, and nitrate should be below 20 parts per million. Temperature should be stable within the recommended range. If parameters are off, perform an immediate partial water change and identify the source of the problem, whether it is overfeeding, a dead fish decomposing in the tank, or a filter malfunction.

Fry that refuse to eat after becoming free-swimming may have developmental issues that prevent them from feeding effectively. If the entire brood is refusing food, the problem is more likely environmental. Check that the food particles are small enough, that water flow is not too strong for the fry to swim and feed comfortably, and that the lighting is not so bright that the fry are hiding instead of foraging.

Parental aggression toward the fry is another situation that warrants immediate action. If you observe one or both parents actively chasing, biting, or consuming the fry, remove either the parents or the fry as quickly as possible. This behavior can escalate rapidly and result in the loss of the entire brood within minutes. Having a backup container or secondary tank prepared in advance is always a wise precaution when raising cichlid fry.
