Whenever possible, raise Congo Tetra fry in groups large enough to allow natural schooling behavior to develop, ideally ten or more individuals.

During the first few weeks, fry tend to remain spread out across the tank, focused primarily on finding food. As they grow and become more mobile, they begin to orient themselves relative to their siblings, swimming in loose clusters. Avoid housing Congo Tetra fry with any other fish species during this vulnerable stage. Even small, peaceful community fish can view the tiny fry as food. Similarly, adult Congo Tetras will readily consume their own fry if given the opportunity. A dedicated nursery tank eliminates these risks and allows the fry to grow without predation pressure.

As the fry approach four to six weeks of age and reach a more substantial size, you can begin to assess their social dynamics. Health Screening & Common Issues

Congo Tetra fry are susceptible to a range of health challenges during their earliest weeks. The most common cause of fry loss is poor water quality, which can manifest as sudden die-offs or a gradual decline in the number of surviving fry. Regular testing for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH is essential. Any detectable ammonia or nitrite requires immediate corrective action through water changes and a review of filtration and feeding practices.

Fungal infections are another frequent concern, particularly if unfertilized eggs or deceased fry are not promptly removed from the tank. A white, cotton-like growth on dead eggs or fry is a clear sign of fungal contamination. Maintaining clean conditions and removing any deceased individuals quickly is the best prevention.
