Clown loach fry are incredibly small and fragile during the first day of life. After hatching, the tiny larvae remain mostly stationary, attached to whatever surface they were deposited on or resting at the bottom of the breeding tank. They are translucent and barely visible to the naked eye, making careful observation essential. During this critical window, the fry rely entirely on their yolk sac for nourishment and should not be offered any external food.
The hatching tank should be kept dimly lit during the first twenty-four hours, as clown loach fry are highly sensitive to bright light. A gentle sponge filter set to its lowest flow rate provides adequate oxygenation without creating currents strong enough to sweep the delicate larvae around the tank. Any dead eggs or fungus-covered material should be carefully removed with a pipette to prevent contamination of the water.
Water quality is paramount during this initial period. Temperature should be maintained steadily between 82 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit, and ammonia and nitrite levels must remain at absolute zero. Even trace amounts of these compounds can be lethal to newly hatched fry. Performing small, careful water changes of no more than five percent using aged, temperature-matched water helps maintain stability without shocking the fragile larvae.
Resist the urge to disturb the fry during this stage. Excessive movement near the tank, tapping on the glass, or attempting to count the hatchlings can cause stress. The best approach is quiet observation from a reasonable distance, ensuring environmental parameters remain stable while the fry absorb the remainder of their yolk sacs.
