Unlike many aquatic species that pass through a larval stage, cherry shrimp are born as tiny replicas of their parents, complete with legs, antennae, and the instinct to forage immediately. The moment they release from the mother, they will settle onto nearby surfaces and begin picking at biofilm and microorganisms.

The first few hours are a critical adjustment period. Shrimplets are nearly transparent at birth, making them extremely difficult to spot in a planted aquarium. They tend to gravitate toward moss, sponge filters, and other surfaces rich in biofilm, which serves as their primary food source during this stage. Avoid disturbing the tank during this time, as the tiny shrimp are fragile and can be easily swept into filter intakes.

It is essential to have a pre-cycled, well-established tank ready before the shrimplets arrive. A mature aquarium will have ample biofilm growth on hardscape, plants, and glass surfaces, providing a natural buffet for the newborns. Tanks that are too new or too clean will lack this essential food layer, putting the shrimplets at a significant disadvantage from the very start.

Keepers should verify that all equipment is shrimplet-safe before hatching occurs. Sponge filters are the gold standard for shrimp breeding tanks because they pose no intake risk and actually serve as a grazing surface. If a hang-on-back or canister filter is used, the intake must be covered with a fine sponge pre-filter to prevent shrimplets from being sucked in.

Feeding Newly Hatched Shrimplets

Newborn cherry shrimp are natural grazers that feed primarily on biofilm, algae, and microscopic organisms found on tank surfaces. In a well-established aquarium, there is often enough natural food to sustain a small batch of shrimplets without any supplemental feeding. However, larger batches or newer tanks may require the keeper to provide additional nutrition to prevent starvation during the critical first weeks.

Powdered shrimp food designed specifically for juvenile shrimp is the safest supplemental option. These foods break down into particles small enough for shrimplets to consume and are formulated to sink quickly to the substrate where the babies tend to congregate. Only a tiny pinch should be offered at a time, as overfeeding in a shrimp tank can rapidly degrade water quality and promote harmful bacterial blooms.

Blanched vegetables are not appropriate for newborn shrimplets because the pieces are far too large for their tiny mouthparts. Instead, focus on foods that create a fine film or dust when introduced to the water. Some keepers culture infusoria or green water in a separate container and add small amounts to the shrimplet tank, providing a cloud of microscopic food organisms that the babies can filter from the water column.

Feeding frequency should be minimal during the first week. If the tank has visible biofilm on surfaces and the shrimplets appear active and constantly picking at surfaces, supplemental food may not be needed at all. Observe the shrimplets closely — healthy babies will have a visible food tract running through their transparent bodies, confirming they are successfully finding and consuming food.

Developmental Milestones

Cherry shrimp shrimplets grow rapidly during their first weeks of life, molting frequently as they increase in size. The first molt typically occurs within two to three days of hatching, and subsequent molts follow every few days as the shrimplet outgrows its exoskeleton. Each successful molt results in a noticeable size increase, and keepers may find tiny, nearly invisible exoskeletons scattered throughout the tank.

By the end of the first week, shrimplets will have roughly doubled in size, though they remain very small and difficult to see without close inspection. Their coloring begins to develop gradually, with faint hints of red or pink becoming visible in higher-grade shrimp lines. Lower-grade shrimp may remain mostly transparent or show only scattered pigmentation at this stage.

At approximately two weeks of age, the shrimplets become noticeably more confident in their movements, venturing further from their initial hiding spots to explore the tank. Their feeding behavior becomes more vigorous, and they begin to show interest in the same food sources used by adults, though they still primarily rely on biofilm and microorganisms. Social behavior also emerges, with shrimplets often clustering together on favored grazing surfaces.

The transition from shrimplet to juvenile occurs gradually over the first four to six weeks. By this point, the young shrimp will be approximately five to eight millimeters long and will display recognizable coloration patterns. They will be actively molting on a regular schedule and will have developed the hardiness needed to tolerate minor water parameter fluctuations that would have been dangerous during their earliest days.

Water Parameters & Environment

Maintaining stable water parameters is the single most important factor in shrimplet survival. Newborn cherry shrimp are far more sensitive to water chemistry changes than adults, and even small fluctuations in temperature, pH, or mineral content can cause failed molts and death. The ideal temperature range for shrimplets is between 70 and 76 degrees Fahrenheit, with a stable pH between 6.5 and 7.5 and a GH of 6 to 8.

Total dissolved solids should be monitored regularly and kept consistent. Sudden shifts in TDS — which can occur during water changes with improperly remineralized water — are a leading cause of shrimplet mortality. When performing water changes in a tank with newborns, use small volumes of no more than ten percent at a time, and ensure the replacement water is matched as closely as possible to the tank water in temperature and mineral content.

Copper is lethal to cherry shrimp at any age but is especially dangerous to shrimplets, whose tiny bodies have no tolerance even for trace amounts. Verify that any water conditioners, fertilizers, or medications used in or near the tank are copper-free. Even tap water can contain copper leached from household plumbing, so many serious shrimp keepers use remineralized reverse osmosis water to eliminate this risk entirely.

The tank should be densely planted with mosses, fine-leaved plants, and other surfaces that support biofilm growth and provide shelter. Java moss, Christmas moss, and subwassertang are excellent choices because their complex structures create countless hiding spots where shrimplets can feed in safety. Floating plants also help by diffusing light and providing additional surface area for biofilm colonization.

Shelter & Hiding Spots

Shrimplets are vulnerable to predation from nearly every other tank inhabitant, including fish that are normally considered peaceful community species. Even small fish such as neon tetras and endlers will readily consume newborn shrimp if given the opportunity. For this reason, dedicated shrimp-only breeding tanks produce dramatically higher survival rates than community setups.

If shrimplets are born in a community tank, dense plant cover becomes absolutely essential for survival. Thick mats of moss, particularly java moss and weeping moss, provide the best protection because their tangled structure creates spaces too small for fish to penetrate but perfectly sized for shrimplets to hide and graze. Piling moss around hardscape features creates multi-layered refuges that significantly increase shrimplet survival rates.

Beyond plants, commercially available shrimp shelters made from ceramic, terracotta, or natural materials like cholla wood and alder cones provide additional hiding opportunities. Cholla wood is particularly valuable because it serves double duty as both shelter and food source — as the wood breaks down in water, it develops a layer of biofilm that shrimplets feed on enthusiastically.

Substrate choice also affects shrimplet safety. Fine-grained substrates like aqua soil or sand allow shrimplets to move easily and find food particles that settle between grains. Coarse gravel can trap tiny shrimplets in gaps between stones, making it a less suitable choice for breeding tanks. A dark-colored substrate has the added benefit of enhancing the color display of cherry shrimp as they mature.

Health Monitoring & Early Warning Signs

Monitoring shrimplet health requires careful observation because their tiny size makes it difficult to detect problems until they become severe. The most reliable indicator of good health is consistent activity — healthy shrimplets are constantly moving across surfaces, picking at biofilm with their small claws. If shrimplets are seen sitting motionless for extended periods or clustering at the waterline, something is likely wrong with the water parameters.

Failed molts are the most common cause of shrimplet death and are almost always linked to improper mineral levels in the water. A shrimplet experiencing a failed molt will appear stuck in its old exoskeleton, unable to fully shed it, and will typically die within hours. Maintaining proper GH and KH levels ensures that shrimplets have access to the calcium and minerals they need to form new exoskeletons during each molt cycle.

White ring of death, a condition where a white band appears around the shrimp's body just behind the head, can affect shrimp of all ages but is particularly dangerous to shrimplets. This condition indicates that the exoskeleton has cracked between segments, often due to a mineral deficiency or a sudden parameter shift, and is frequently fatal. If this condition is observed, immediately test and adjust GH and KH levels.

Counting shrimplets regularly, while difficult, helps keepers track survival rates and detect potential problems early. A sudden drop in visible shrimplet numbers could indicate predation, poor water quality, or disease. Using a flashlight to illuminate the tank at night, when shrimplets tend to be more active and visible, can make counting easier and provide a more accurate population assessment.

When to Worry

Some shrimplet loss is normal and expected even in well-maintained tanks. A survival rate of fifty to seventy percent from hatching to juvenile stage is considered good for most hobbyist setups. However, certain signs indicate problems that require immediate intervention to prevent a total loss of the batch.

If no shrimplets are visible within 48 hours of an expected hatching and the mother is no longer carrying eggs, the eggs may have been infertile or the shrimplets may have been consumed immediately upon release. Check for the presence of potential predators, including planaria, dragonfly larvae, or hydra, all of which are small enough to attack newborn shrimp and may have entered the tank unnoticed on plants or other additions.

Rapid die-offs where multiple shrimplets are found dead simultaneously almost always point to a water quality emergency. Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, GH, KH, and TDS immediately. Ammonia and nitrite should be at zero in a properly cycled tank — any detectable level is dangerous, especially for shrimplets. If parameters are off, perform a very small, carefully matched water change and identify the source of the problem before it claims the remaining shrimplets.

A foul smell from the tank, cloudy water, or a sudden bacterial bloom following the addition of supplemental food indicates overfeeding and organic waste buildup. Remove any uneaten food immediately and reduce feeding amounts going forward. In severe cases, a small activated carbon insert in the filter can help clear the water quickly. Always prioritize water quality over feeding, as shrimplets can survive on natural biofilm alone far longer than they can survive in degraded water.
