Banjo catfish eggs are typically deposited on flat surfaces, leaf litter, or directly onto the substrate. Once spawning is complete, the eggs are generally left unattended by the parents, which means the keeper takes on full responsibility from the very start. Within the first day, fertile eggs will appear slightly translucent with a faint amber or tan hue, while infertile eggs tend to turn white and develop fungus quickly. Removing infertile eggs promptly helps protect the remaining clutch from contamination.
During the first twenty-four hours, it is critical to maintain stable water parameters in the hatching container. Temperature should remain steady between 76 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and the water should be well-oxygenated with gentle aeration. Avoid strong currents, as the eggs and newly emerged fry are extremely delicate and can be damaged or displaced by turbulent flow. A small sponge filter set to its lowest output is ideal for providing both filtration and gentle water movement.
Hatching generally occurs within three to five days of spawning, depending on water temperature. The newly hatched fry are tiny, often barely visible to the naked eye, and will remain mostly motionless on the bottom of the container as they absorb their yolk sacs. During this initial period, no food should be offered. The fry are sustaining themselves entirely on their yolk reserves, and introducing food too early only pollutes the water and puts the fragile hatchlings at risk.
Keepers should dim the lighting over the hatching container, as banjo catfish are naturally nocturnal and the fry are photosensitive. A thin layer of fine sand or dried leaf litter on the bottom of the container gives the fry surfaces to rest on and helps reduce stress. Observe without disturbing the container whenever possible, checking only for fungused eggs or obvious water quality issues.
