Color changes continue throughout the adult stage and are entirely normal. Adult bamboo shrimp can range from deep reddish-brown to light tan, cream, or even greenish hues depending on diet, mood, and environmental factors. A shrimp that has recently molted often appears lighter in color until its new exoskeleton fully hardens and darkens. Rapid blanching to a very pale color unrelated to molting can indicate acute stress and warrants investigation.

Enrichment for bamboo shrimp comes primarily through environmental variety and social interaction. Rearranging tank decorations periodically provides new perching options and flow patterns for the shrimp to explore. Keeping bamboo shrimp in groups of two or more enhances natural behavior, as the shrimp often feed in proximity to one another and may even establish a loose social hierarchy around preferred feeding positions.

Nocturnal activity is a normal and healthy part of adult bamboo shrimp behavior. These shrimp are often more active and mobile during nighttime hours, exploring the tank, changing positions, and foraging more broadly than they do during the day. If you observe your tank after lights out with a dim red or blue light, you may discover that your seemingly sedentary shrimp is actually quite the nighttime wanderer.

Molting & Exoskeleton Maintenance

Molting remains a significant event in the life of an adult bamboo shrimp, even though the frequency decreases compared to the juvenile stage. Each molt represents a period of vulnerability during which the shrimp sheds its rigid outer exoskeleton and must wait for the new one to harden before resuming normal activity. In the days leading up to a molt, an adult bamboo shrimp may become less active, reduce its feeding, and seek out sheltered areas of the tank. The old exoskeleton may appear slightly dull or opaque compared to its usual appearance. These pre-molt signs are normal and should be expected. Avoid disturbing the shrimp during this period, and ensure that hiding spots are available for it to retreat to.

The actual molting process typically occurs quickly, often overnight or during a period of low activity. The shrimp extracts itself from the old shell by flexing and contorting its body, leaving behind a nearly perfect replica of itself. The discarded molt should be left in the tank for at least twenty-four hours, as the shrimp frequently returns to consume it.
