Regular observation is the cornerstone of health maintenance. Spending a few minutes each day watching your shrimp provides early detection of potential problems. Changes in behavior such as lethargy, loss of appetite, or prolonged hiding can indicate stress or the onset of illness. Changes in coloration, particularly a shift toward opaque white or reddish tones, can signal bacterial infection, environmental stress, or impending death if not addressed promptly.

Water testing should be performed weekly at minimum, with particular attention to ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and general hardness. Amano Shrimp are sensitive to copper and other heavy metals that can enter the water through untreated tap water, certain medications, or contaminated equipment. Using a quality water conditioner that neutralizes heavy metals with every water change is a simple but important protective measure.

A varied supplemental diet is more beneficial than relying on a single food type. High-quality shrimp pellets or wafers serve as a reliable staple, providing a balanced mix of plant-based ingredients and protein. Blanched vegetables such as zucchini, spinach, and broccoli are eagerly consumed and provide important vitamins and fiber. Rotating between different food types across the week ensures a broad nutritional profile.

Amano Shrimp are famous among hobbyists for their remarkable algae-eating abilities, and adults in their prime are the most effective algae cleaners. They consume many types of soft algae including green film algae, diatoms, and even certain forms of hair algae that other tank inhabitants ignore. However, it is a common misconception that Amano Shrimp can subsist on algae alone or that they should be kept hungry to maximize algae consumption. Well-fed shrimp are actually better algae eaters because they are healthier and more active.

Feeding frequency for adults is flexible but should generally consist of supplemental food offerings every one to two days, with the amount calibrated so that all food is consumed within two to three hours. Leftover food that remains in the tank decomposes and degrades water quality. In tanks with large shrimp populations or limited natural biofilm, daily feeding may be necessary. The types of algae that Amano Shrimp consume most effectively include soft green algae, brown diatoms, and many varieties of hair algae. They are less effective against harder algae types such as black beard algae and green spot algae, though they may nibble at these when softer options are scarce. Understanding the limits of their algae consumption helps set realistic expectations and allows keepers to employ complementary control methods where needed.

Stocking density matters when using Amano Shrimp for algae control. A general guideline is one shrimp per two to three gallons of aquarium volume, though this can be adjusted based on the severity of the algae problem and the availability of other food sources. Unlike fish, shrimp cannot be treated with most common aquarium medications, as many of these contain copper or other ingredients that are lethal to invertebrates. This makes prevention far more important than treatment, since the options for addressing illness once it occurs are extremely limited.

The most critical preventive measure is ensuring that nothing toxic enters the aquarium. This includes copper-based medications added for fish diseases, insecticides or pesticides that may be present on new plants, household chemicals sprayed near the tank, and heavy metals in untreated tap water. When treating fish diseases in a community tank that contains shrimp, always verify that the medication is invertebrate-safe before adding it. When in doubt, remove the shrimp to a separate holding tank during the treatment period.

Quarantine practices are another important preventive tool. New plants, decorations, and especially new livestock should be quarantined before being added to a tank containing Amano Shrimp. New fish can carry parasites and diseases that, while they may not directly infect shrimp, can necessitate medication that puts the shrimp at risk. New plants may have been treated with pesticides or snail-killing chemicals that can be fatal to shrimp. A quarantine period of two to four weeks in a separate tank mitigates these risks.

Maintaining a consistent water change schedule is the simplest and most effective form of preventive care. Regular partial water changes of 15 to 25 percent weekly dilute accumulated toxins, replenish minerals, and help maintain stable parameters. The replacement water should be temperature-matched, dechlorinated, and similar in mineral content to the existing tank water to avoid triggering stress responses or premature molting in the shrimp.

Behavioral Maturity

Adult Amano Shrimp display a confident and predictable behavioral repertoire that makes them engaging aquarium inhabitants. Fully mature individuals are bold foragers that spend the majority of their time out in the open, working their way across plants, substrate, glass, and hardscape in search of food. They are largely unperturbed by moderate activity outside the tank and quickly learn to associate the approach of their keeper with feeding time.

Feeding behavior in adults is particularly entertaining to observe. When a desirable food item is detected, adult Amano Shrimp will swim rapidly through the water column to reach it, often competing with one another in an amusing scramble. Larger females tend to dominate smaller males at feeding stations, sometimes physically pushing them aside to claim the best position. While this competition can appear aggressive, it rarely results in any injury and is a normal expression of size-based social dynamics.

Adult Amano Shrimp are also known for a behavior that can catch new keepers off guard: escape attempts. These shrimp are capable climbers and will readily crawl out of an uncovered aquarium, particularly at night or during periods of environmental stress such as poor water quality or low oxygen levels. Any opening in the tank lid, no matter how small, is a potential escape route. A tightly fitting lid or cover is essential for any tank housing Amano Shrimp.

Nocturnal activity increases notably in adult shrimp. While they are active during daylight hours as well, many keepers observe heightened activity and more daring foraging behavior after the lights go out. Observing the tank with a dim flashlight after dark reveals a level of activity that may not be apparent during the day, with shrimp venturing into areas they typically avoid when the tank is fully illuminated.

Molting & Shell Maintenance

Adult Amano Shrimp continue to molt throughout their lives, though the frequency decreases compared to the rapid molting of juveniles. A healthy adult typically molts every three to six weeks, depending on environmental conditions, diet, and whether the female is cycling through reproductive phases. Each molt is preceded by a brief period of reduced activity and hiding, followed by the emergence of a slightly larger, soft-bodied shrimp that will harden over the following day or two.

The discarded exoskeleton is often found intact in the tank and can be mistaken for a dead shrimp by new keepers. These molts are completely transparent and hollow and should be left in the tank where they will be consumed by the shrimp themselves and by other invertebrates. The mineral content of the old shell is valuable nutrition that supports the calcification of the new exoskeleton.

Maintaining adequate mineral levels in the water is essential for healthy molting in adults. General hardness and calcium levels should be monitored periodically, particularly in tanks with soft water sources. If mineral levels are consistently low, supplementation through mineral additives, cuttlebone, or mineral-rich substrates can help prevent molt-related problems. Signs of mineral deficiency include soft or discolored shells, difficulty completing molts, and the white ring of death condition that indicates a shrimp is stuck mid-molt.

Female Amano Shrimp undergo a distinctive molt pattern tied to their reproductive cycle. After releasing a clutch of eggs, females will molt and then release pheromones into the water that signal their readiness to mate. Males respond by swimming frantically around the tank in what hobbyists call a mating frenzy. This behavior is dramatic but harmless and typically subsides within a few hours. The female's post-molt vulnerability during this period makes adequate hiding spots particularly important.
