The juvenile period for Merino sheep generally spans from weaning at around three to four months through to approximately twelve to eighteen months of age. During this time, the young Merino undergoes dramatic physical changes, transitioning from a small, milk-dependent lamb into a near-adult-sized animal with a developing fleece. Growth rates vary based on genetics, nutrition, and environmental conditions, but a well-managed Merino lamb should show steady, consistent weight gain throughout this period.
Skeletal development is particularly important during the juvenile phase. The long bones are still growing, and the skeletal frame that will support the animal for the rest of its life is being established. Nutritional deficiencies during this stage, particularly in calcium, phosphorus, and trace minerals, can result in structural weaknesses that become apparent later in life. Regular body condition scoring helps ensure that juveniles are neither too thin nor carrying excess weight, both of which can compromise skeletal development.
The Merino's trademark fleece undergoes significant development during adolescence. The birth coat gradually gives way to the dense, fine-fibered adult fleece that the breed is prized for. Wool fiber diameter, crimp pattern, and staple length all become more defined during this stage, and experienced shepherds can begin to assess the wool potential of individual animals. Nutritional stress during this period often manifests as a visible break or weakness in the wool staple, which can reduce the fleece's commercial value.
By the end of the juvenile period, Merino sheep should be approaching their adult frame size, though they will continue to fill out and add muscle mass into their second and third years. Ram lambs will begin to show more pronounced masculine features, including horn growth in horned strains and increased neck and shoulder muscling. Ewe lambs develop a more refined build and begin to show the body proportions characteristic of mature breeding ewes.
