Determining when a Hampshire pig is ready for breeding requires evaluation of both physical maturity and overall health. Hampshire gilts typically reach puberty between five and seven months of age, but reaching puberty does not mean a gilt is ready to breed. Most experienced breeders wait until a gilt is at least eight months old and has reached a minimum body weight that indicates she has the physical reserves to support pregnancy and lactation without compromising her own development.

Physical readiness encompasses more than just age and weight. Pregnancy & Gestation

Confirming pregnancy can be done through several methods, including failure to return to estrus at the expected 21-day mark, ultrasound examination by a veterinarian, or observing physical changes as pregnancy progresses. Ultrasound is the most reliable early confirmation method and can typically detect pregnancy by 25 to 30 days after breeding.

Nutritional management during pregnancy is critical for the health of both the sow and her developing piglets. During the first two-thirds of gestation, the sow's nutrient requirements are only modestly increased above maintenance levels, and overfeeding during this period leads to excessive weight gain that can cause farrowing difficulties. Heat lamps should be positioned at a safe height to prevent fire risk and burns, and the temperature in the creep area should be approximately 85 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit at piglet level. Heated mats are an alternative that reduces fire risk and provides consistent warmth. The creep area should be positioned to one side of the farrowing space where piglets can access it easily but the sow cannot lie on it.

Assembling a farrowing supply kit in advance ensures that everything needed is at hand when the sow begins to deliver. Essential supplies include clean towels for drying piglets, antiseptic for navel treatment, dental nippers for needle teeth if you plan to clip them, a scale for weighing piglets, a notebook for recording birth times and weights, obstetric lubricant, and a means of providing supplemental colostrum or milk replacer for weak piglets. Having your veterinarian's emergency contact information readily available is also prudent.

Signs that farrowing is imminent include milk let-down from the teats, nesting behavior where the sow arranges and rearranges bedding, restlessness, and a slight discharge from the vulva. Hampshire sows typically begin farrowing within 24 hours of milk production becoming evident. Most sows farrow without assistance, but attendant supervision, especially for first-time mothers, allows for timely intervention if complications arise.

Postpartum Care

The immediate postpartum period requires close attention to both the sow and her litter. After all piglets have been delivered, the sow should pass the placental membranes, usually within a few hours of delivering the last piglet. Retained placentas can cause serious infection and should be addressed by a veterinarian if they have not been expelled within four to six hours after the final piglet. Monitoring the sow for signs of postpartum infection, including fever, loss of appetite, foul-smelling discharge, and lethargy, is critical during the first few days.

The sow's nutritional demands increase dramatically during lactation. A nursing Hampshire sow with a large litter requires significantly more calories, protein, and water than she did during pregnancy. Feed intake should be gradually increased over the first week of lactation to avoid digestive upset, reaching full lactation rations by the end of the first week. Restricting feed during lactation causes the sow to lose excessive body condition, which compromises milk production and her ability to rebreed promptly after weaning.

Water intake during lactation is remarkably high, and inadequate water availability is one of the most common and easily correctable causes of reduced milk production. A lactating Hampshire sow may consume six to eight gallons of water per day or more in warm conditions. Water delivery systems must provide adequate flow rates, and water should be fresh and clean at all times.

Monitoring the sow's interaction with her piglets during the first few days helps identify and address problems early. A sow that is reluctant to lie down and nurse, that is aggressive toward her piglets, or that shows signs of mastitis requires immediate intervention. Mastitis, an infection of the mammary tissue, causes painful swelling and reduced milk production and can be life-threatening if untreated. Any hard, hot, or discolored mammary glands should be evaluated by a veterinarian promptly.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Breeding Hampshire pigs carries ethical responsibilities that extend beyond the mechanics of reproduction. Every breeding decision should be made with a clear purpose, whether that is to improve breed quality, produce animals for a specific market, continue a valuable genetic line, or contribute to the conservation of purebred Hampshire genetics. Breeding without a plan for the resulting piglets is irresponsible and contributes to animal welfare problems.

Genetic diversity and health should be priorities in any Hampshire breeding program. Inbreeding, the mating of closely related animals, increases the risk of genetic defects and reduces overall vigor. Maintaining accurate pedigree records and selecting breeding pairs that are not closely related helps preserve genetic health within a breeding program. Using boars from unrelated lines and periodically introducing new genetics through purchased animals or semen from tested boars strengthens the genetic base.

The welfare of both the breeding animals and their offspring must guide every aspect of a breeding operation. The oversupply of pigs, particularly large breeds like Hampshires that require substantial resources to house and feed, creates welfare problems when owners cannot adequately care for them.
