A Toulouse goose or gander intended for breeding should be at a healthy weight, neither obese nor underweight, with good muscle tone, clean plumage, bright eyes, and no signs of illness or parasites. Obesity is a particular concern in Toulouse breeding stock, as excessive body fat in both sexes reduces fertility and can make mating physically difficult for this already heavy breed. Many experienced Toulouse breeders report dramatically higher fertility rates when breeding pairs have regular access to swimming water compared to pairs that mate only on land. A good broody goose will manage the hatching process instinctively, adjusting her position to accommodate pipping eggs, removing shell fragments, and keeping newly hatched goslings warm under her feathers while the remaining eggs continue to hatch. Provide food and water within easy reach of the nest so the mother does not have to leave the eggs for extended periods during the critical hatching window.

Once all viable eggs have hatched, allow the goslings to rest and dry under the broody or in the incubator before transferring them to a brooder setup. If using a broody mother, she will typically begin leading the goslings away from the nest within 24 to 48 hours of the last hatch. Ensure the path from the nesting area to food and water is safe for tiny goslings, removing obstacles, covering drains, and blocking access to deep water until the goslings are large enough to swim safely.

Postpartum & Early Family Care

The postpartum period for a Toulouse Goose mother involves a gradual return to normal behavior while she dedicates herself to rearing her goslings. A broody female that has been sitting for a month will have lost body condition during incubation, as many broody geese eat and drink minimally while on the nest. If goslings were hatched artificially and you wish to foster them under a broody goose that lost her eggs or hatched a small clutch, introductions should be done carefully. Slip the foster goslings under the broody at night when she is settled and calm, placing them gently among any existing goslings. Most Toulouse geese will accept foster goslings without hesitation if the introduction is done within the first day or two of hatching, though some individuals are more discriminating. Monitor the family closely the following morning to ensure the mother has accepted all goslings and is allowing them to feed and shelter beneath her.

The first two weeks after hatching are the most labor-intensive for the caretaker regardless of whether a broody mother or artificial brooding is used. Ensure that food and water are always available, that predator protection is in place, and that the goslings are thriving with steady weight gain and active, alert behavior. By the time the goslings reach two to three weeks of age, the most critical postpartum period has passed and the family unit or brooder group will have settled into a more predictable routine.

Responsible Breeding Ethics
