Determining when a LaMancha doe is ready for breeding involves evaluating both physical maturity and overall health status. While doelings may reach sexual maturity as early as four to five months of age, breeding at such a young age is strongly discouraged because the animal's skeletal and muscular systems are not yet developed enough to support the demands of pregnancy, kidding, and lactation. Most experienced breeders wait until a LaMancha doeling is at least eight months old and has reached approximately eighty pounds or more before considering her for breeding.

Body condition is as important as age and weight when assessing breeding readiness. A doe that is too thin may not conceive, or she may struggle to maintain herself and her developing kids during gestation. A doe that is excessively overweight faces increased risks of pregnancy toxemia and difficult deliveries. The ideal breeding candidate has a body condition score of approximately three on a five-point scale, with adequate muscle and a moderate covering of fat over the ribs and loin.

Bucks should also be evaluated for breeding soundness before the season begins. The Estrous Cycle

During the first three months of gestation, the developing kids are small and the doe's nutritional requirements do not increase dramatically beyond normal maintenance. Good-quality hay and access to free-choice minerals are sufficient during this period. Avoid overfeeding grain during early gestation, as excessive weight gain increases the risk of complications later in pregnancy. Continue normal exercise and management routines, as healthy activity is beneficial throughout gestation.

Kidding & Delivery

LaMancha does are generally excellent mothers and capable kidders, but preparation and close observation are still essential for ensuring safe deliveries. Normal kidding begins with the doe showing signs of labor, including restlessness, frequent lying down and getting up, vocalization, and visible abdominal contractions. The first stage of labor, during which the cervix dilates, can last several hours. The second stage, during which the kid is delivered, typically takes thirty minutes to two hours for the first kid, with subsequent kids arriving more quickly.

The normal presentation for a kid is front feet first with the nose resting on top of the front legs, sometimes described as a diving position. Once the feet and head are visible, delivery usually progresses rapidly. If you observe feet without a head, a head without feet, or a tail presentation, the kid may be malpositioned and the doe may need assistance. If you are inexperienced with correcting malpresentations, contact your veterinarian immediately rather than attempting to reposition the kid yourself, as improper manipulation can injure both the doe and the kid.

After each kid is delivered, ensure that the airways are clear by wiping mucus from the nose and mouth with a clean towel. The doe will typically begin cleaning the kid immediately, which stimulates breathing and circulation. If she does not, rub the kid vigorously with a dry towel to encourage it to breathe and begin moving. Dip the umbilical cord in iodine solution to prevent infection, and confirm that the kid begins nursing within the first one to two hours.

The placenta should be passed within two to twelve hours after the last kid is delivered. Do not pull on the placenta, as this can cause hemorrhage or leave retained tissue in the uterus. If the placenta has not been passed within twelve hours, consult your veterinarian, as a retained placenta can lead to serious uterine infection. Count the placentas to ensure one has been passed for each kid, though they may sometimes be fused together in twin or triplet births.

Postpartum Care

The postpartum period is a critical time for both the doe and her kids, and attentive management during the first few weeks after kidding sets the foundation for a successful lactation and healthy offspring. Monitor the doe closely for signs of postpartum complications, including excessive vaginal discharge with a foul odor, fever, loss of appetite, or failure to bond with her kids. These symptoms may indicate a retained placenta, uterine infection, or other conditions that require veterinary attention.

Nutrition during the postpartum period and early lactation must match the doe's increased energy demands. A LaMancha doe producing one to two gallons of milk per day at peak lactation requires substantially more calories, protein, calcium, and water than a dry doe. Increase grain gradually over the first two weeks after kidding to avoid digestive upset, and provide unlimited access to high-quality alfalfa hay. Monitor body condition weekly and adjust feeding to prevent excessive weight loss, which can compromise milk production and reproductive recovery.

The doe's udder should be checked daily for signs of mastitis, which is an infection of the mammary gland that can develop rapidly and cause serious illness. Symptoms include heat, swelling, hardness, or pain in one or both halves of the udder, along with changes in the milk such as clots, discoloration, or a watery consistency. Mastitis requires prompt veterinary treatment, and untreated cases can permanently damage the udder tissue and reduce future milk production.

Allow the doe adequate time to recover before considering rebreeding. Most experienced breeders wait until the doe has been lactating for at least two to three months and has regained good body condition before exposing her to a buck again. Breeding a doe that is still thin or depleted from the demands of pregnancy and early lactation places unnecessary stress on her body and can result in poor conception rates, difficult pregnancies, and compromised kid health in the next generation.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

While it can be tempting to breed only the most productive or most visually appealing animals, maintaining a broad genetic base within the breed reduces the risk of inherited health problems becoming widespread.
