Determining when a Boer goat is ready for breeding involves evaluating physical maturity, body condition, and overall health rather than relying solely on age. While Boer does can reach puberty as early as four to five months of age and bucks may be fertile even earlier, breeding animals before they are physically mature enough to handle the demands of pregnancy, kidding, and lactation leads to stunted growth, difficult deliveries, and poor kid survival. Most Boer breeders recommend waiting until does are at least 70 to 80 percent of their expected adult body weight before first breeding, which typically corresponds to eight to twelve months of age depending on management and nutrition.
Body condition is a critical factor in breeding readiness. Does should enter the breeding season at a body condition score of 3.0 to 3.5 on the 1-to-5 scale, which indicates adequate fat and muscle reserves to support the physiological demands of pregnancy and lactation without requiring excessive nutritional intervention. Does that are too thin may fail to conceive, have lower ovulation rates resulting in fewer multiple births, or lack the body reserves to support themselves and their kids through lactation. Before the breeding season begins, ensure that both bucks and does are current on vaccinations, have been evaluated for parasites, and are free from infectious diseases that could impact fertility or be transmitted during mating. Diseases such as brucellosis, chlamydiosis, and caseous lymphadenitis can affect reproductive performance and spread through the herd during breeding.
