This allows the birds to reach full physical maturity and ensures that hens are strong enough to handle the nutritional demands of sustained egg production.
Selecting quality breeding stock is the foundation of a successful breeding program. Both the drake and hens should exhibit the breed characteristics defined by the relevant poultry standards, including the distinctive upright carriage, long and slender neck, cylindrical body shape, and sound leg structure. Health is equally important. Breeding birds should be free of chronic illness, parasitic infection, and any congenital conditions that could be passed to offspring. A veterinary health check before the breeding season provides confidence that the selected birds are in suitable condition.
Body condition should be assessed carefully before breeding begins. Hens that are underweight may struggle to produce viable eggs and sustain the calcium and protein demands of a laying cycle. Conversely, overweight ducks may have reduced fertility and are at higher risk of egg-laying complications. The drake should be in lean, active condition, as excess weight can impair mating ability. Adjusting the diet in the weeks leading up to breeding to optimize body condition is a worthwhile investment in the success of the breeding effort.
The drake-to-hen ratio is an important management consideration. A single healthy Runner Duck drake can effectively breed with four to six hens. Keeping more than one drake per small group of hens can lead to competition, excessive mating pressure on the hens, and reduced fertility due to overbreeding stress. If multiple drakes are housed together, providing ample space and monitoring for aggression is essential to prevent injuries during the breeding season.
