Observing each bird's body condition, gait, feather quality, eye clarity, and behavior during feeding provides a wealth of information about overall health. Picking up and physically examining each duck periodically allows assessment of breast muscle condition, weight, foot health, and the presence of any lumps, injuries, or parasites that may not be visible at a distance.

Seasonal health challenges require anticipation and preparation. Hot summer weather poses a risk of heat stress for Muscovy ducks, particularly for the larger drakes. Shade, fresh water, and well-ventilated housing are essential during warm periods. Winter brings its own concerns, including frostbite on caruncles and feet, reduced foraging opportunities, and the need for increased caloric intake to maintain body temperature. While they are less dependent on swimming water than many duck breeds, they still need water deep enough to submerge their heads for bill cleaning and eye washing. Waterers should be cleaned and refilled daily, as ducks quickly foul their water with food debris and droppings. Bedding in the shelter should be absorbent and easy to replace. Pine shavings, chopped straw, or a deep litter system all work well. The deep litter method, where fresh bedding is added on top of existing material and the entire bed is only fully replaced several times per year, can be effective in maintaining warmth and reducing labor, but it requires careful management to prevent anaerobic conditions and ammonia buildup. Predator-proofing is an absolute necessity for any duck enclosure. The floor of outdoor runs should either be covered with hardware cloth buried several inches underground to prevent digging predators or should have a solid floor. Unlike many commercial duck breeds that have been selected for year-round production, Muscovy hens tend to lay in seasonal cycles, with peak production occurring in the spring and early summer months. A healthy hen in her prime can produce between 60 and 120 eggs per year, typically laid in clutches with broody periods interspersed.

Providing appropriate nesting areas encourages hens to lay in predictable, accessible locations rather than hiding eggs in hard-to-find spots around the property. Nesting boxes should be placed in quiet, dimly lit areas of the shelter, large enough for the hen to turn around comfortably, and lined with clean straw or shavings. Muscovy hens are highly secretive about their nests and may reject a nesting site that feels too exposed or disturbed. Offering several options and allowing the hens to choose their preferred locations often yields the best results.

Egg collection should occur at least once daily to maintain freshness and discourage broodiness in hens that are not intended for hatching. Muscovy hens are among the most dedicated and persistent brooders of any domestic duck breed, and once a hen goes broody she will sit on the nest for the full 35-day incubation period with minimal breaks for food and water. If brooding is not desired, removing eggs promptly and blocking access to the nesting area can help break the broody cycle, though some hens are remarkably persistent.

Muscovy duck eggs are larger than chicken eggs and have a slightly different composition, with a higher ratio of yolk to white. They are prized by many bakers for their richness and are excellent for all culinary purposes. Eggs should be collected gently, cleaned if necessary with a dry cloth or fine sandpaper rather than washing, and refrigerated promptly. Washing removes the protective bloom on the eggshell that helps prevent bacterial penetration, so minimal cleaning is preferable.

Molting & Feather Care

Adult Muscovy ducks undergo a complete molt at least once per year, typically in late summer or early fall after the breeding season concludes. During the molt, old feathers are shed and replaced with new plumage, a process that demands significant nutritional resources and can leave birds looking disheveled for several weeks. Increasing the protein content of the diet slightly during the molting period supports healthy feather regrowth and helps birds complete the transition more quickly.

The molt is an energy-intensive process, and birds may appear less active and less social during this time. Egg production typically ceases during the molt as the hen's body redirects resources toward feather growth. This is a natural and healthy response, and production will resume once the new plumage is fully established. Providing a stress-free environment during the molt, with minimal disruptions and ample nutrition, gives birds the best conditions for a smooth transition.

Feather quality is an excellent indicator of overall health in adult Muscovy ducks. A bird in good condition will have smooth, glossy feathers that lie flat against the body and shed water effectively. Dull, ragged, or persistently ruffled feathers may indicate nutritional deficiencies, parasitic infestation, or underlying illness. Access to bathing water is important for feather maintenance, as ducks preen and oil their feathers after bathing, distributing the waterproofing secretions from the preen gland located at the base of the tail.

Wing clipping, if practiced, needs to be repeated after each molt since the new flight feathers grow back fully. The procedure involves trimming the primary flight feathers on one wing only, which creates enough imbalance to prevent sustained flight while allowing the duck to maintain some ability to flutter and cushion landings. Only the feather itself is cut, well above the blood supply in the shaft, making the process painless when performed correctly.

Routine Foot & Body Care

Bumblefoot is one of the most common health issues affecting adult Muscovy ducks and is caused by a bacterial infection that enters through small cuts or abrasions on the foot pad. The condition presents as a hard, swollen lump on the bottom of the foot and can become serious if left untreated. Prevention is far more effective than treatment and involves maintaining clean, dry bedding, providing smooth surfaces free of sharp objects, and ensuring that perches and platforms are wide and flat rather than narrow or rough-textured.

Regular foot inspections should be part of the routine health check for every bird in the flock. Catching bumblefoot in its earliest stages, when the swelling is small and soft, allows for simpler treatment and a better prognosis. Advanced cases may require veterinary intervention, including surgical debridement and antibiotic therapy. Obese birds and heavy drakes are at increased risk, making weight management an important preventive measure.

The caruncles, the fleshy growths on the face that are a hallmark of the Muscovy breed, require occasional inspection for signs of injury, infection, or frostbite. During extremely cold weather, caruncles are vulnerable to frostbite damage, which appears as discoloration, swelling, or tissue loss. Applying a thin layer of petroleum-based protectant to the caruncles before periods of extreme cold provides some protection, and ensuring that nighttime housing is draft-free and adequately insulated reduces the risk significantly.

Toenail maintenance may be necessary for ducks that spend most of their time on soft surfaces and do not wear their nails down naturally. Overgrown nails can cause discomfort, alter gait, and increase the risk of injury. Trimming with standard pet nail clippers is straightforward, though care must be taken to avoid cutting into the quick. Having styptic powder on hand in case of accidental bleeding provides a margin of safety during the procedure.
