Wyandotte hens generally reach sexual maturity between five and seven months of age, though the breed tends to mature slightly later than lighter production breeds. If a broody Wyandotte hen has hatched the chicks, she will typically manage the brooding process naturally, keeping chicks warm, guiding them to food and water, and protecting them from the rest of the flock. If chicks were incubated artificially, they should be transferred to a prepared brooder with a heat source set at approximately 95 degrees Fahrenheit, along with fresh water and chick starter feed.

Postpartum Care

Caring for a broody Wyandotte hen after a successful hatch is important for both her health and the well-being of her chicks. If the broody hen and chicks are housed with the rest of the flock, close monitoring is essential during the first few days. Most Wyandotte hens are fiercely protective mothers and will aggressively defend their chicks from curious or aggressive flock mates.
